Video: Bachmann's the Tim Tebow of the Republican primary; Update:From December

Tim Tebow? If she pulls off a last-minute win in Iowa, Michele Bachmann might be the Frank Reich of the Republican primary.  A new ad from a pro-Bachmann PAC asks Iowans to believe in miracles as well as coincidences:

A political action committee supporting Michele Bachmann debuted an ad this week that compares the Minnesota congressman to Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

The ad notes that “the establishment sports guys love to hate Tim Tebow: he’s not smart enough, his mechanics are no good, he’s not accurate enough – still, he just keeps winning.” The ad goes on to argue that Tebow makes sports fans “feel guilty” because he doesn’t “drink, cuss, smoke, or kick opponents when they’re down” and because he is a born-again Christian. …

“The same could be said of Michele Bachmann: no baggage, Christian, and like Tebow, she keeps fighting and she just keeps winning votes,” the announcer says.

Well, we’ll see about that, won’t we?  Bachmann hasn’t won a vote yet, and neither has anyone else.  Technically, as I pointed out in my earlier column, no one will have won a delegate, either, even after tonight’s caucus, which is non-binding.  (Delegates get assigned at the state convention in the spring; 2008, McCain won Iowa’s delegates even though Huckabee won the caucuses.)  This ad intends on linking Bachmann to a very popular figure among conservatives and keep spirits high enough to convince her fans to come out to the caucuses tonight.

It’s not the first time that someone has claimed to be the Tim Tebow of the race.  Rick Perry rolled out that claim in a debate three weeks ago, an effective moment during Perry’s improvement in debate performances.  This makes the claim by the pro-Bachmann camp look less original, and more like an “I am Spartacus” moment — which benefits Tim Tebow, perhaps, but probably not either of the candidates at this stage of the Iowa caucuses, but it certainly won’t hurt.  Besides, Tebow can use the help this week after losing three in a row and facing the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend in the playoffs.

Update: Mea culpa; this is from mid-December, which means Bachmann got it before Perry.  It hit my inbox today, but my pal Guy Benson corrected the record on Twitter.
