The governor's race in Virginia to replace term-limited Glenn Youngkin is on, and the two nominees are already swinging heavy timber at each other.
The Republican candidate is none other than Virginia's electrifying, battle-tested, and uber-competent Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears.

She's spent the past four years working with Youngkin to correct the course of Virginia's politics, even though they now have a slim Democratic House and Senate majorities.
She's not much of one for woke.

To be honest, there was a bit of a bumpy spot in the relationship between VA Trump supporters and Sears because of her feelings a few years ago, but those all seem to have been smoothed over. To be fair, there were a lot of people watching Trump anxiously at the time before the assassination attempt who were in that same emotional boat.
...She said her opinion changed after hearing his speech at the Republican National Convention last summer.
“I wanted to hear that he has changed,” she said Wednesday, describing her thought process ahead of the convention. “I just wanted to hear, on a moral level, that that’s what I was looking for as a Christian. I wanted to hear that from a moral standpoint. And then I heard it. I heard him say, after he was shot, ‘God has saved my life, and he has saved my life for a purpose, and I am going to live for him. And I humbly ask for your vote.’ I was like, ‘yes, he’s back.’ And so after that, we were good.”
The Lt. Gov has since been vocal in her support for the administration, even as DOGE cuts work to her opponent's advantage in those big blue circles around the D.C. metro area.
The former active duty United States Marine has been tried and tested horrifically in real life as well.
Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle Sears (R - Virginia) made history when she became the first woman elected to that position and the first woman of color elected to statewide office in Virginia.
While her success as a politician was recognized worldwide, her strength as a mother, who experienced unimaginable heartbreak, gave her even greater compassion to lead.
Sears’ 27-year-old daughter, Dejon, and her 5 and 7-year-old grandchildren, Faith and Victoria, were killed in a 2012 car crash in Fairfax, Virginia. Dejon suffered from mental illness, a condition she battled most of her adult life.
“She got into a car one night and she was experiencing an episode,” Sears said. “We didn’t know she had stopped taking her medication. She was driving the car at 100 mph and ended up killing herself and our grandchildren and injuring another person.”
The Virginia governorship is a prize Democrats want back in their hands badly, and they are willing to spend bigly to get it.
Abigail Spanberger, the progressive congresswoman running against Sears, has a seven-million-dollar campaign chest advantage.
New campaign finance reports show Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger is outpacing her Republican opponent, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Spanberger raised over $6.7 million in the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, Sears raised over $3.1 million. It’s important to note that state law prohibited Sears, a current statewide official, from receiving campaign contributions during the 45-day General Assembly session in January and February.
“Abigail Spanberger has a pretty easy story to tell, which is about Democratic enthusiasm,” said Randolph-Macon Political Science Professor Rich Meagher. ”On the other hand, I think Winsome Sears is able to say, look, I’m raising millions of dollars too. It’s not like this is a long-shot campaign with no hope.”
Spanberger’s haul brings her cash-on-hand advantage to around $7 million. Meagher said that Spanberger’s money edge over Sears could be because Virginia is one of only two states with a governor’s race in 2025.
But Spanberger does have money problems after another fashion.
There are questions being raised about a possible ethics violation because Spanberger put her $900K home into a trust but then didn't list it in her financial disclosures as required by Congress.
Former Democratic Congresswoman from Virginia Abigail Spanberger is being accused by her GOP opponent in the upcoming Virginia governor's race of failing to include her role as a trustee in financial disclosure reports while she was a member of Congress.
The campaign for Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who is aiming to replace incumbent GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin, is calling the incomplete disclosures "a calculated lie," not an "accident." But, according to Spanberger's campaign, the only asset contained in the trust is Spanberger's personal residence, which is not required to be disclosed.
In 2017, according to local real estate records, Spanberger and her husband updated their will and, as part of that process, transferred ownership of their home into a trust that listed the pair's kids as the beneficiaries. They bought it for roughly half-a-million dollars, and it is now worth close to one-million.
I don't know if that's going to be an actual violation that would gain traction or influence someone's vote. It's typical for Democrats.
Additionally, Sears has Spanberger's Congressional record to wield. She can easily use Spanberger's claimed close relationship with Joe Biden and her whole-hearted enabling of his policies to hammer the Democrat with.

Virginia is experiencing real problems with the consequences of Biden's open borders.
Ask yourself: who do you trust more to handle this threat?

Youngkin proposed 'no more sanctuary cities' legislation back in December of last year, and as soon as Trump was inaugurated, the duo got to work authorizing VA state troopers to work with the federal immigration authorities on the removal of illegal immigrants.
...“As Governor, protecting our citizens is my foremost responsibility and today we are taking action that will make Virginia safer by removing dangerous criminal illegal immigrants from our Commonwealth,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “This order will allow Virginia State Police and the Department of Corrections to partner with President Trump’s administration on federal immigration enforcement. Dangerous criminal illegal immigrants should not be let back into our communities to assault, rape and murder. They should be sent back where they came from.”
“I am a legal immigrant and now a naturalized citizen. Working together, the Governor, Attorney General, and I have made Virginia safer. We supported more funding for law enforcement and tackled violent crimes in our cities. Now, working with President Trump, we can take on the scourge of dangerous and violent illegal immigrants,” said Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. “We’ve seen too many tragic stories after dangerous criminals in this country illegally were put back on the streets, and this Executive Order will make sure we send them back to where they came from.”
Predictably, it's not hard to see who the media is pulling for and - I know you'll be shocked, but it's NOT the person who would be the FIRST FEMALE GOVERNOR OF COLOR.
Not by a long shot.
The lefty press is all in for the blonde.

The differences between the two women couldn't be more starkly defined. Spanberger voted against the Parents Bill of Rights, for instance, even as she represented a state that's notorious for abusive school boards and a school system that harasses victims and protects their attackers.
Spanberger also chooses weird progressive things to celebrate.
..."Happy Tax Day," Virginia gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger posted to (Twitter/X):
She added, "Just a reminder that while Virginians are filing their taxes, the Trump Administration is cutting IRS staff and making it harder for people across the Commonwealth to get the help they need."
...Her Republican opponent in the race, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, R-Va., posted nothing to her official Twitter/X account yesterday — almost as though it was a day of mourning.
She did respond to Spanberger on her personal account, however.
"You just can’t make this up," she began.
"Only a D.C. politician like @SpanbergerForVA would defend the IRS on Tax Day AFTER voting to hire 87,000 agents to wring every dollar out of you."
The day before Tax Day Earle-Sears wished the U.S. Air Force Reserves a happy birthday on her official account, and observed that their "commitment keeps our skies safe and our nation strong!"
Republican Earle-Sears celebrated that which keeps America safe, strong, and above all free, and the roar of a U.S. Air Force jet flying overhead is the sound of freedom.
Democrat Spanberger celebrated the IRS, that agency which keeps Americans in chains.
Right now, Spanberger has about a 7-point polling advantage over Sears. The election is set for 4 November.
There's a lot of time yet to go, money to be spent, and dirt to be dug between now and then, as well as watching the effects of any Trump actions as they play out.
It's going to be a scrum the whole way, especially as Democrats have their sights set intently on this one.
