New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu has an interesting take on the 2024 presidential race. He shared it while being interviewed by CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Thursday. Sununu predicted that neither Biden nor Donald Trump will be the nominee for president in November 2024.
Poppy Harlow was shocked and could only say, “Wow, wow!” It was a pretty bold statement on early morning television this far out from the election. Sununu has made it crystal clear that he does not support Donald Trump. He was considered a potential candidate in the GOP presidential primary but he decided to sit this one out. He has plenty of time if he chooses to run in the future – he’s 48 years old. He is known for speaking his mind, often in provocative ways to stir the pot.
He explained various reasons why neither man will end up on the 2024 election ballot. He said the way it’s playing out, I don’t think Trump or Biden is on that ticket.”
Sununu offered a scenario where Biden goes through the primary and then to the Democrat convention, collects all the delegates he needs, then his team of people begins to steer the delegates to other people. He said it will be a wild convention. Sununu pointed to Biden’s health, the legal problems that Hunter has, and how Team Biden is trying to keep The Big Guy from having to testify. I don’t know. I don’t see it happening like that. I don’t think Joe Biden’s ego will allow him to step aside, no matter what, and he’ll remain as the candidate unless something goes so wrong with his health that he has no choice but to exit the race.
The governor thinks Trump is “very, very beatable” and suggests that the other candidates bring more of their personalities to the race. He said Republicans want some drama. I don’t know about that – it seems that Republicans are tired of the drama, especially Republican voters looking at alternatives to Trump. Trump provides drama every day, whether he’s in the White House or a private citizen. Drama is his brand. It’s exhausting, though, and voters say they want a change. However, Trump leads in the polls by a wide margin.
If Republican voters truly want change, it’s time to start getting behind alternative candidates. The field has been almost stagnant and that needs to change. Sununu pointed out that Trump is at 37% in New Hampshire, meaning 63% of the voters don’t want Trump as the nominee. He spoke about the challengers when Harlow pushed him to do so. He said there has to be a candidate that can surge.
“Look [Vivek] Ramaswamy, I got to tell you, is exciting people. He gets people excited on stage. I think he’s got to bring a little more to it other than just being the other anti-woke guy,” Sununu offered.
“I think some of the newer candidates, I think [Doug] Burgum is spending some money. People looking his way. You know, the Pence, Haley, Tim Scott, they’ve been in the race a while. People know exactly where they are. They’re great individuals with amazing records, but they’ve got to bring some personality and I think there’s opportunity to do that.” he continued.
Sununu has maintained all along that Trump cannot win in November 2024, even a conservative state like Georgia.
“The math has shown Donald Trump has no chance of winning in November of ’24. He wouldn’t even win Georgia. If you’re a Republican that can’t win Georgia of November ’24, you have no shot, and he’s proven that” Sununu said when he announced he was not running for president. “Not only has he proven it, but the candidates he gets behind in a good conservative state like Georgia lose the race. His messaging doesn’t translate,” he added.
The other candidates are going to have to start pushing back against Trump. So far, they have remained too cowardly to speak out against him. If they think they should be chosen as the party’s nominee then they need to make their case. They are starting to look cowardly, unable to ding up Trump. And, Trump continues to concentrate on attacks on DeSantis. DeSantis remains the top alternative to Trump and one who can beat Biden if polls are to be believed, but he is still a distant alternative candidate. We’ll have to see if his campaign reboot starts to move the needle in the polls.
Sununu’s prediction makes for a good parlor game – who will be the candidates in 2024 if Trump and Biden both implode? Biden has both health concerns and legal problems. The Hunter Biden sweetheart deal was supposed to keep The Big Guy out of it all but it only exposed the level of corruption the Biden family possesses. It is far worse than we thought and Joe Biden is compromised.
It doesn’t matter how many indictments Trump is issued, he isn’t leaving the race. His base supporters refuse to even consider alternatives. We will know more when the first debate rolls around next month. Who will break out on the debate stage and show some courage to go after the others? We’ll see who wants the nomination if anyone other than Trump does. Otherwise, we are all just wasting our time.
