D.C. mayor fears illegal migrants are being "tricked" into bus trips to city from Texas, Arizona

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was a guest on Sunday’s Face the Nation on CBS. During her interview, host Margaret Brennan asked the mayor about the buses of illegal migrants that are arriving in the city from Texas and Arizona. The mayor gave an odd response.

Margaret Brennan asked Mayor Bowser how significant the influx of migrants into D.C. from the two red states was. (Notice that Brennan described them as migrants, not illegal migrants.) Bowser admits it is a significant issue for the city and then she lodged a random and unfounded statement. She said she fears that the illegal migrants are being “tricked” into boarding buses for nationwide trips. Why she went there is not clear but there has been no indication that any illegal migrant is being bused to Washington, D.C. against their will.

Bowser called on the federal government to work across state lines to prevent people being tricked into getting on buses because many of them do not have Washington, D.C. as their final destination. She said that most of them are likely asylum-seekers. True, many of them claim asylum when they are apprehended or if they bother to come through a legal port of entry, but that is because that is what they have been told to do. Most are coming for jobs and financial opportunity, or to reunite with other family members, which is not a legal reason for asylum. Organizers on the other side of the border and cartel bosses tell them what to say when they are apprehended or questioned by Border Patrol agents or other law enforcement.

Interestingly enough, Bowser sounded like Governors Abbott and Ducey when she said that local taxpayers should not have to pick up the tab for illegal migrants bused into town. That is exactly the point that Abbott and Ducey are making with the bus rides into D.C. Let Joe Biden figure out how to take care of them. The burden falls on Mayor Bowser as it does the governors when they are bused to the border by cartels and professional immigration advocates. Bowser said the federal government should be paying for it. Again, that’s the point. Texas and Arizona have been picking up the tab for the Biden border crisis.

Governor Abbott announced his plan in April out of frustration with Joe Biden’s neglect to secure the southern border. The first busload of illegal migrants arrived the next week in Washington, D.C. At the time, some Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing Abbott for the move. The Republicans, though, criticized Abbott because he wasn’t bussing them back to Mexico. By June, DHS was talking about adopting Abbott’s plan and busing illegal migrants deeper into the United States, away from the border. Has Mayor Bowser expressed fear over the illegal migrants on DHS buses being tricked into boarding them? Of course not.

Almost immediately after Abbott made good on his threat to bus illegal migrants to Washington, Florida Governor DeSantis issued a warning to the illegal migrants – do not come to Florida. Life will not be easy.

“To those who have entered the country illegally, fair warning: do not come to Florida. Life will not be easy for you, because we are obligated to uphold the immigration laws of this country, even if our federal government and other states won’t,” DeSantis’s office told Fox News.

“Florida is not a sanctuary state, and our social programs are designed to serve the citizens of our state,” DeSantis’s statement said, according to Fox News.

“If you have come here illegally, you have been done a great disservice by the Biden Administration. They have encouraged you to make dangerous treks, oftentimes at great physical distress to you and your family. Sometimes, this has even meant putting your fate into the hands of dangerous coyotes and human traffickers,” it added.

Mayor Bowser is trying to demonize red state governors in order to normalize illegal migration. Democrats are fond of painting Republicans as evil. Tricking an illegal migrant into boarding a bus and traveling many miles away would be an evil thing to do to a human being. That, however, is not happening and she knows it. She deliberately put it out there to plant it into the minds of viewers. Shame on her.
