Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. After a long period of conflict between Hungarian-American citizen, billionaire George Soros and the government of Hungary, it appears that the leftist investor’s Open Society Foundations has been effectively driven from his native land. Most of the reporting on this story thus far is coming out of Europe, but it’s also been confirmed by Reuters. The foundation will be closing up shop in Soros’ native country and moving the office to Germany. (Sputnik)
According to reports, George Soros’ Open Society Foundations will close their office in the Hungarian capital and move to Berlin.
“The government of Hungary has denigrated and misrepresented our work and repressed civil society for the sake of political gain, using tactics unprecedented in the history of the European Union,” Patrick Gaspard, president of the Open Society Foundations, said.
Hungary is one of the most anti-immigrant EU member-states and has constantly clashed with the European Union over their contrasting stances on tackling the migrant crisis.
The fact that this is happening should come as too much of a surprise, but the speed at which the decision was reached is still remarkable. As we previously discussed, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been on the warpath against Soros and his well-funded NGOs which push for open borders in Hungary, recently putting forward new legislation in the nation’s parliament which would essentially ban all of the foundation’s activities there.
Soros had vowed to continue the fight, but the recent national elections in his native land may have given him pause on that front. Orban won in a landslide, garnering public support which most American politicians could only dream of. The voters there seem to genuinely support Orban’s tough immigration policies and are not big fans of Soros, so George really wasn’t fighting some sort of common man’s battle against a repressive government.
Here’s a bonus walk down memory lane for you. Soros had predicted that he would prevail in the battle for open borders and that hasn’t worked out so well, but here’s another prediction that he made. Watch this short Bloomberg video from just before Donald Trump’s inauguration where he predicts that the President will quickly fail and the markets “won’t do well” during the Trump presidency. It comes at around the 3:45 mark if you want to fast foward. This guy’s a regular Nostradamus, I tell ya.
