Mr. Brown’s remarks began after he stepped into his car and could be heard saying to an unseen aide: “That was a disaster. You should never have put me with that woman. Whose idea was that?” He added, “It was ridiculous.”

The aide suggested that British television “might not go live with that one.” Mr. Brown responded, “They will go live.”

In response to the aide’s question, “What did she say?” Mr. Brown replied, “Oh — everything — she just was a bigoted woman.”
