The new Republican Congress has finally begun exposing the weaponization and politicization of law and regulatory enforcement — just as the FBI handed Republicans a fat example of both. The problem isn’t the rank and file, as Adam Baldwin says in our latest episode. “They took away the decentralization of the field offices and moved decision-making to the headquarters in DC,” Adam points out from testimony from two former FBI agents yesterday. Now, “the FBI agents are afraid to put their heads above the parapet” with the politicized leadership calling the shots.

Adam and I also discuss the FBI’s partnership with the SPLC, a topic I explored at more length this morning, as well as the attempt to burrow into the ‘radical traditionalist Catholic’ community. “It’s basically thoughtcrime,” Adam declares, “it’s very Orwellian and it continues to be Orwellian.” Adam sees the House committee on weaponization as a good start — but as I point out, it’s only a start. Both of us agree that voters will have to care enough to impose accountability.
