The basics: inexplicably, given the level of security at the White House Correspondent's Dinner, a man penetrated several layers of security that start far outside the Washington Hilton and rushed the magnetometers just outside the ballroom where the president, vice president, First Lady, and a significant number of Cabinet members and congressmen were.

According to multiple on-scene witnesses, an unknown man dashed toward the dining area and was met with gun fire.
Trump wanted the dinner to resume, but the Secret Service unsurprisingly stopped that idea for obvious reasons.

Details are still scarce, and we will get more soon from the White House Briefing Room, where the president and others will speak.
The F.B.I. said a suspect was in custody after the Secret Service called “a shooting incident” near a security screening area. According to the White House press pool, a group of reporters who travel with the president, a member of the Secret Service shouted, “Shots fired,” and agents with guns drawn sprinted through the aisles to reach the president.
Guests were about five minutes into the dinner hour when a commotion could be heard toward the back of the ballroom. Gasps were heard and then hundreds of attendees dropped under their seats at their tables.
Security officials with weapons drawn emerged on the dais as the president and the first lady, Melania Trump, were quickly escorted out. Mr. Trump later wrote on social media, “The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition.”
The event has already been highly politicized, with liberal activists charging that it was faked, and others making less charitable comments.

It sure looks like the security could have been better.
The Washington Hilton hotel, located in the city’s northwest quadrant about one-and-a-half miles from the White House, is where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
A Wall Street Journal reporter who was attending the event described the security protocols guests were subjected to as they arrived. He said that all that was needed to enter the hotel was a paper ticket. At the entrance of the ballroom for dinner, there were metal detectors. Once past dinner security, there were guards standing throughout the room. On the terrace floor, there was security that fired at the shooter.
