Trump to Coast Guard grads: Let's face it, no politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly

Tough call here for populists, who wonder: What about Sarah Palin? Tough call for the rest of the party too, who wonder: What about George W. Bush? Or, er, Lincoln or Kennedy?

He’s grandiose even in his self-pity, although he has a case that no presidential candidate in modern history has been treated worse by the media. Never in my lifetime was their contempt for a major-party nominee as clear as it was for him. How much of that was “unfair” depends on your view of him. As for being treated unfairly as president, too early to say — although the fact that even some Republicans are starting to murmur about impeachment doesn’t bode well:

Asked by The Hill if the details in the memo would merit impeachment if they’re true, [Rep. Justin] Amash replied: “Yes.”

“But everybody gets a fair trial in this country,” Amash added as he left a House GOP conference meeting…

In an interview late Tuesday night with CNN’s Don Lemon, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) compared Trump allegedly pressuring Comey to drop the Flynn investigation to the obstruction of justice cases that led to impeachment proceedings for former presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

McCain, who rarely tries to conceal his contempt for Trump, described the last few weeks of scandal as being of “Watergate size and scale” last night. Democratic consultants are reportedly scrambling to poll-test impeachment to see if it’s too soon to start chattering about it regularly or if the public’s open to the idea. They didn’t think they’d need to begin gauging it this early. “I mean, Jesus, it’s not even Memorial Day!” said one to McClatchy.

Here’s Trump at today’s Coast Guard commencement followed by Tapper noting that perhaps some of this terrible treatment the president’s endured has been caused by mistakes of his own making. As ridiculous as Trump’s claim is, this clip reminds you of his political charm: He’s a rich kid turned billionaire playboy turned president whining about how unfair life is to a group of servicemen, but he turns it into a populist pitch about overcoming adversity. And the crowd seems to be on his side.
