Annals of Electric School Buses: Kathy Hochul Loves Little Frozen Fingers and Toes

It must be Christmas because today has been nothing but a Green-grifting gift to me.

SQUEEEE!

First, Doug Burgum shuts down the offshore wind farm construction on the East Coast again - I love the never say die in this guy - and now I have an electric school bus story.

Daggum - the nog cup runneth over.

Let me set the stage here - we're talking about Erie County, New York, a balmy winter destination notable for such cities as 'Buffalo.'

This was Buffalo, a little over a week ago.

Iguanas were dropping like flies from the blue spruces due to the unusual weather.

Perhaps more to come. Lows have been in the 20s consistently with frigidly dangerous wind chills.

And naturally, I'm yanking your chain about the iguanas because this IS Buffalo, Erie County, and basically all of upstate New York at its most December-ish. With people dreading January and February, who know anything about anything.

Hello. Nothing new unless you live in Albany or New York City, and are a children-hating progressive politician with half a functioning brain named Kathy Hochul.

Only that way, in a state where this weather happens like clockwork, global warming or not, would you condemn schoolchildren who have already stood in the sub-freezing temperatures to catch that school bus to ride on a bus where the driver has to turn the heat off so the bus has enough juice to get them safely to school.

There is your brain on drugs...

...and then there are the brains on woke, progressive Democrats.

On the heels of a statewide mandate requiring all school bus purchases in New York State be electric by 2027, parents in the Lake Shore Central School District are speaking out, claiming some bus drivers are turning the heat down, or off completely, in an attempt to conserve battery life on their electric school buses.

WIVB News 4 has received several calls from concerned parents in the school district, which covers parts of Angola, Brant, and Derby, regarding their child’s bus trips to and from school, claiming they’re coming in freezing when they get home after getting off the bus.

The kids are coming home saying their bus is freezing cold and the parents are giving them hand warmers.

“The heaters on the bus run off the same electricity as the bus itself,” said Scott Ziobro, a former school board candidate and parent who has children who go to school in the district. “They were told that it drains the battery capacity of the bus itself.

NOBODY PANIC EVERYTHING IS FINE

...“The bus broke down on route,” explained Chris Lampman, another concerned parent whose son allegedly had to stand outside in the freezing cold as a result. “They deployed a substitute bus, and the bus was more than 30 minutes late. My son stood outside for over 35 minutes waiting for a bus that wasn’t coming. Some of those kids are on there for upwards of a half hour or more while the bus makes its route. There’s no reason that the kids should freeze for all that time.”

Lynn Urbino, a grandmother who helps raise her grandson, was shocked and appalled when he told her why the heat allegedly wasn’t on in the bus.

My grandson came home from school last week when it was 23 degrees,” Urbino stated. “He said they didn’t have heat. He came in cold, and I told him, I said, ‘isn’t the bus warm?’ And he said ‘no, they can’t put the heat on because it drains the battery.'”

23° and there's no heat on the bus because the battery, which is adversely affected by the cold temperatures (and range is one of the first things compromised), but has to work harder because of the *checks notes* cold temperatures (read that as 'make heat') might drain off and leave everyone stranded in 23° weather.

Or, what the hell - it might just break down on its own and strand your little person out in the cold anyway. Electric buses are notorious for simply crapping out, or worse - flaming out.

As Eric Worrall points out over at Watts Up With That, there are also health concerns for bus drivers sitting in a frozen can.

...If this claim heating is being switched off is true, the risk to the health of kids is unconscionable. Not everyone is wealthy enough to afford all the warm weather clothes their kids might need. Young kids especially can lose gloves and hats, or forget to put them on. A kid who boards the bus with a cold might have pneumonia by the time they get off.

There is also a risk to the health of the drivers. Sitting still in hard frost temperatures while driving a bus is a potential DVT, frostbite, stroke and heart attack risk.

I don’t blame the drivers – they are likely just doing what they have to, to ensure the kids aren’t exposed to cold for an even longer time while waiting for a replacement bus. But if anything bad happens, I’m sure the driver will be blamed for violating policy by switching off the heating.

To be honest, bus drivers as an employment class have never been known as outstanding physical specimens at any time, ever. This makes it much worse. They are also subjected to the door opening and shutting, and that rush of even colder air without any chance of warming up a bit before the next stop.

The sheer inhumanity of it all is gobsmacking.

But progressives want you dead in any event, so frozen, starving - they don't care how they accomplish reducing the population, as long as it happens.

Perhaps enough parents, especially if repeatedly socked with bills for sick kids thanks to this, will now join their voices to the forces marshalling in the legislature to reverse the mandate.

...Meanwhile, there are efforts in Albany to roll back the electric school bus requirement. Republican State Senator Alexis Weik is sponsoring legislation to give school districts the choice and freedom to choose which type of buses they want to buy.

They’re living in New York City, which is also La La Land, because this is a city-centric mandate,” Sen. Weik said in response to the NYSERDA’s assertions. “This might work in New York City where the bus routes might be a mile to a quarter of a mile long, and gas stations are hard to come by in a city that’s so overcrowded and developed, but that’s not the case for the rest of New York whether you’re on Long Island or Upstate.”

Weik claims that the mandate has placed an immense amount of pressure and stress on school districts across the state who are struggling to meet the mandate in time.

Fellow Republican and State Senator Patrick Gallivan, from Western New York, is also a sponsor of the bill. He weighed in on the issue, saying the mandate will be costly and that superintendents should have the right to choose for themselves.

This legislation removes a costly state mandate and will give school superintendents the authority to decide for themselves whether they want to purchase electric school buses based on the needs and resources of their communities,” Gallivan said. “Given the state’s recently adopted 15-year energy plan, this issue and other all-electric mandates and policies must be reexamined to ensure they align.”

The state and school districts certainly won't be able to afford the mandate they've imposed on themselves with the Big Beautiful Bill, and the Trump administration is on the warpath against the subsidies that underpinned the scheme to begin with.

...This EV bus policy passed in an overwhelmingly blue state, and was based on the Democrats' larger bid to push electric vehicles onto everyone -- whether they wanted it or not.

Former President Joe Biden was a big proponent of this push (and his since-stripped subsidies are why Ford is facing a nearly $20 billion hit), and most Democrats agreed in lockstep.

It doesn't take an expert to tell you that this was a terrible idea, especially when it came to school buses.

Leftists forced taxpayers to pay millions of dollars for electric buses that are clearly inferior to traditional ones.

Not to mention, electric bus companies are getting to be kind of few and far between. The green sychphants in the news media like to color it as 'consolidation in the industry,' but it's more honestly a boom-and-bust cycle playing out, and theyare in the 'bust' bigtime right now.

A couple of the commenters on this pretty good video about the situation in New York state nail it as far as the progressive state of mind being inured to human suffering in pursuit of their goals. It holds true for any of the blue states that have bought into this crackhead scheme that experience significant seasonal weather shifts
