Stephanopoulos Rants: 'Bedrock Tenets of Democracy Are Being Tested'

George Stephanopoulos delivered a rant as he opened his Sunday morning political show, This Week on ABC News. Democrats sure are grumpy these days that despite all that is being thrown at former President Donald Trump, he is still ahead in polling.

During Saturday night's White House Correspondents Dinner, entertainer Colin Jost commented in awe that polls show Trump and Biden tied, though Trump is tied up in court these days as Democrats conduct lawfare against Trump to try to win in November. They have learned nothing since 2016. The more Trump is prosecuted, the more his support grows. Voters are not stupid. They see what is happening.

George Stephanopoulos isn't as smart as he thinks he is. He wanted to tell his viewers that this election is not "normal."

No American president had ever faced a criminal indictment for retaining and concealing classified documents. No American president had ever faced a federal indictment or a state indictment for trying to overturn an election, or been named an unindicted co-conspirator in two other states for the same crime. No American president has faced hundreds of millions of dollars in fines for business fraud, defamation, and sexual abuse.

Until now, no American presidential race had been more defined by what’s happening in courtrooms than by what’s happening on the campaign trail. The scale of the abnormality is so staggering, that it can actually become numbing. It’s all too easy to fall into reflexive habits, to treat this as a normal campaign, where both sides embrace the rule of law, where both sides are dedicated to a debate based on facts and the peaceful transfer of power. But, that is not what’s happening this election year. Those bedrock tenants of democracy are being tested in a way we haven’t seen since the Civil War. It’s a test for the candidates, for those of us in the media, and for all of us as citizens.

No kidding. Wee George unwittingly makes the argument for Trump. He was a part of the Bill Clinton campaign and presidency. Who is he to point a finger at the behavior of a presidential candidate? Normal in those days was a president having sex with a White House intern. Normal was battling 'bimbo eruptions' with James Carville. Bill Clinton paid off Paula Jones. Clinton was impeached for lying in a deposition.  Would George like to reminisce about those good old days?

Let's not forget that Sandy Berger, Clinton's National Security Adviser, took classified documents from the National Archives and cut them up with scissors. When he was caught, Berger called it an honest mistake. He stuffed the classified docs down his pants and in his socks, though. He was hiding what he was doing. Berger ended up making a deal and pled guilty. He avoided jail time. He paid a fine, lost his security clearance for three years, and cooperated with investigators. Was that behavior normal?

Yes, the bedrock tenets of democracy are being tested but to lay it all on the prosecution of Trump is cynical, even for a partisan hack like Stephanopoulos. It takes some cojones to pretend that the Biden administration has been the picture of normal. Biden is a habitual liar. Every time he speaks, he fabricates stories or re-writes history for his benefit. He violates a Supreme Court ruling with impunity every time he releases billions more in student debt forgiveness to win over young voters. Biden brags about using an alleged workaround. Biden should have been impeached already over his dereliction of duty as he deliberately leaves the southern border wide open. He refuses to do his most important and basic duty - protect the homeland and its residents. Don't forget the boxes and boxes of classified documents that were unprotected in Biden's garage, his homes, and his offices. He was not entitled to have any of them because they were taken when he was a senator and the vice president. Who knows what he has taken while president because surely he will have another book ghostwritten for financial gain when he leaves office.

Spare us the sanctimony, George. He would not even be on our television screens if it weren't for his role in the Clinton administration.

Never Trumpers loved George's little rant.

Was the Steele dossier normal? Both of those two men were fine with using the oppo research paid for by Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2015 against Trump. It was completely debunked, yet the media made it a story to trash Trump for the duration of his time in office.

Joe Biden promised a return to normal if he was elected in 2020. He has failed miserably. There is no normal in Biden's America. We live in an upside-down world. It is no wonder that Biden is seen to be a worse president than previous presidents, including Jimmy Carter

American voters aren't stupid. George Stephanopoulos just thinks we are.

Update (Ed): Mediaite erred in transcribing Stephanopoulos' use of the word tenets. Tenants inhabit a dwelling; tenets are values and principles. It's a common and somewhat frustrating error. Stephanopoulos used the correct word.  I'll leave the excerpt alone, but I have corrected our headline.
