Award-winning broadcaster suspended for speaking the truth during a college bowl sportscast

North Carolina State radio broadcaster Gary Hahn was suspended on Friday. His offense was referring to “illegal aliens” in El Paso while giving an update on the Sun Bowl being played in El Paso.

Hahn was calling the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The North Carolina State Wolfpack was playing the Maryland Terrapins. Hahn was giving a score update and when he announced the score of the Sun Bowl in El Paso, he made the mistake of making a wisecrack.

“One other bowl game involving an ACC team going on, that’s the Sun Bowl, and amongst all the illegal aliens down in El Paso, it’s UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6,” Hahn said.

Sorry, that’s too much truth going on there, Mr. Hahn. Can’t risk offending Sleepy Joe and his administration or the open borders progressives that have the administration in their clutches. The truth is that Hahn is right – there are plenty of illegal aliens in El Paso. There are thousands of them and more arriving every day. There are so many that shelters are overflowing with people and the illegal aliens are turned out on the streets. The Biden administration has turned El Paso into a giant tent city.

What did Hahn say wrong? Was it the way he phrased it by using the term ‘illegal alien’? Our Founding Fathers used that terminology. Was it that he brought politics into sports? Since when is that a big deal? I’m old enough to remember players taking a knee on the sidelines as a political statement and sports teams and their management fell all over themselves to join in, virtue-signaling their wokeness.

El Paso wouldn’t be offended, that’s for sure. The people and the city’s leaders are screaming for attention themselves. Even the city’s Democrat mayor, Oscar Leeser, declared a state of emergency earlier this month and has extended it. The Sun Bowl fan fest was canceled last week because the convention center is in use – it is housing about 1,000 illegal aliens. The convention center was converted to a shelter during the recent unusually cold winter weather.

Nonetheless, Mr. Hahn is now suspended. He is an employee of Learfield Communications. Hahn has been the voice of North Carolina State football and men’s basketball since 1991. He is an award-winning broadcaster. He was honored as the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year in 2011 and 2020. Learfield issued a short statement.

“LEARFIELD has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn from his agreement indefinitely following comments made during today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl radio broadcast,” Learfield said in a statement.

Alas, the Wolfpack lost the Duke’s Mayo Bowl 16-12.

Let’s hope that Hahn’s suspension is a brief one and he is back broadcasting for the men’s basketball season. It was an ad lib, a wisecrack, a little bit of snark. And, it was the truth. He hit a nerve and that can’t happen in Biden’s America. We are being conditioned to think an open border and the humanitarian and national security crises in the chaos are normal. Just live with it. Biden, Kamala, and Secretary Mayorkas look Americans in the eye and lie as they say the border is secure. They lie that the border is not open. They don’t care. This is their plan. But no one is supposed to talk about it.
