Suspected Terror Attack in Switzerland by Man Shouting 'Allahu Akbar'

When the BBC says the attacker was a "Swiss man," that's technically true but also very misleading. The attacker was a naturalized citizen from Turkey named Nesip Dedeler. He has apparently been on police radar since 2015.

Marius Weyermann, commander of the Zurich cantonal police, said at a news conference...that the suspect lived in the area and had come to authorities' attention in 2015 for distributing Islamic State (IS) group propaganda.

The AP adds that he spent much of the last couple years in Turkey.

Mario Fehr, the Zurich region’s top security official, described the attack as “an evil act of terror.” He said the suspect was born in Switzerland and gained Swiss citizenship in 2009, and apparently had spent much of the last two years in Turkey.

But there's a potential scandal of sorts here. Dedeler allegedly has some mental issues and either called or walked into a police station on Monday.

He said that on Monday, the suspect was sent to a psychiatric hospital after he had presented himself at a police station, where he made "incoherent statements".

Tuesday, Dedeler left the hospital, apparently just checking himself out. Police officers picked him up again and took him back to the hospital but on Wednesday the hospital gave the all clear, saying he was not a danger to himself or others.

And yet, this morning, less than 24-hours later, Dedeler was running through the streets with a knife shouting Allahu Akbar. Turn this up a bit and you can hear him.

So it sounds like the cops knew this guy was radicalized and dangerous but the hospital refused to hold him. That kind of incompetence would get most people fired from most jobs but not doctors I guess. They set a lunatic free to attack people and no one even apologizes.

So is this about mental problems or terrorism? Police seem to be saying both. The are calling this a terror attack but also suggesting he should have been held by the hospital for being out of it. 

Mario Fehr, Canton Zurich's security director, said it was "clear from the scene that the motive for this act must be sought in the realm of radicalisation and extremism".

So take your pick, I guess. At this point there seems to be a disagreement. 

Finally, as bad as this was, it cold have been much worse. As you may have noticed in the video above, Dedeler ran past a group of young kids with his knife. He could have seriously hurt or killed a whole group of them but for some reason he just kept running.
