Progressives Settle on a Response to the Shooting of Two National Guard Members

Beege has been covering this all afternoon into the evening. I just wanted to add that it appears the talking points have gone out and the left is circling in on a uniform response to this tragic situation. The response is to blame Trump for calling the Guard to DC in the first place. Beege already posted this tweet (and the reaction to it).

This argument makes no sense whatsoever as Charles Cooke pointed out.

You can disagree with the deployment but the deployment didn't cause the shooting...unless you're saying it did. I think this is the looming worry that has so many leftists echoing the same talking points this afternoon.

He's really doubling down on this. If the National Guard hadn't been called, some deranged nutter wouldn't have shot them. So it's literally Trump's fault. That's the argument and there's no doubt about it.

Could it be that the shooter is the actual problem? The shooter and whatever motivated him to do this? No, it can only be Trump and anyone who aided him.

Caleb Howe notes how similar all of these responses sound.

By the way, there's no doubt that crime is down dramatically in DC since the National Guard and various law enforcement agencies were sent into Washington, DC. I wrote about it here just last week.

DC's own crime statistics show big drops this year for all violent crime compared to the same time last year (last year's numbers had already dropped compared to 2023).

  • Homicide is down 28%.
  • Sex abuse is down 37%.
  • Assault with a dangerous weapon is down 11%.
  • Robbery is down 35%.
  • Total violent crime is down 28%.
  • Burglary is down 27%.
  • Motor vehicle theft is down 19%.
  • Total property crime is down 13%.

It's all good news. You'd probably be hearing a lot more about it if Trump weren't involved.

So Trump gets no credit for the drop in crime but all of the blame for the behavior of some lunatic targeting Guard members. That's how this works. Meanwhile, here's how people on the left treated them prior to today.

There is of course a "shouldn't have been there" argument that makes sense. It's the one regarding criminal illegal aliens. But we all know what the left thinks of that argument. They don't care about it at all. Not even a little bit.

Is that relevant? We don't know for sure yet, but it might be.

The FBI will initially investigate the shooting as a possible act of terrorism, two senior U.S. law enforcement officials said.

The officials said the suspect, who is alleged to have used a handgun, has been initially identified as an Afghan national. Law enforcement officials are still trying to confirm all of the person’s details, they said.

A motive has not been determined, and the nature of the investigation could change.

Bottom line, this appears to be an ambush attack and possibly even an act of terrorism. Rather than wait to see who is responsible and why, some on the left are already trying to blame the president. It's repulsive behavior in response to a targeted attack on American Guardsmen. And, to be clear, it's not limited to the few examples I mentioned above or even to all the people liking those tweets. Lots of smaller progressive accounts are echoing the same idea.
