Pope Francis: Time to Ban 'Deplorable' Surrogate Pregnancies

“The path to peace calls for respect for life, for every human life, starting with the life of the unborn child in the mother’s womb, which cannot be suppressed or turned into an object of trafficking,” Pope Francis said Jan. 8.

“In this regard, I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs. A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract.”

[Pope Francis has at least been solid on pro-life teachings of Catholic doctrine, even if he has tried to downplay that issue during his pontificate. This seems like an odd moment to highlight it for that reason, even if it was at the celebration of the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism. Why not talk more about abortion? Perhaps he did and the news media ignored it in favor of covering this point. I doubt that the world diplomatic corps will be moved by such a call, but it is still good to have a Pope issue it nonetheless. — Ed]
