One evening in 2011, I overheard a conversation among three older gentlemen who sounded like they had just come from the bar.
“We need a guy with fire in his belly, like Teddy Roosevelt,” proclaimed one. “These guys like Mitt Romney and Bobby Jindal sound like they work in a fast-food restaurant.”

Romney of course went on to run a forgettable campaign against Barack Obama. As for former Louisiana Gov. Jindal, his campaign slogan when he ran against Trump in 2016 might as well have been “nice guys finish last.”
I don’t know who that amateur commentator was, but he was much more insightful than the professionals you tend to meet down in Washington.
