Ed: Abdul El-Sayed is an ugly human being. Mike Rogers should cut this into an ad and run it throughout the next three months. And if he doesn't do it, the NRSC had better make sure that voters see who El-Sayed truly is.

Semafor: The party sees its chances of keeping Senate control brightening after Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination to take on Mike Rogers, who came close to winning Michigan’s Senate race in 2024. Democrats are quickly coalescing around El-Sayed, but the wounds of his ugly primary battle against Rep. Haley Stevens will likely take some time to fully heal.
That tension makes Michigan the curveball that Republicans needed. If Democrats lose the seat of retiring Sen. Gary Peters, they’d need to net five seats elsewhere to take back the majority — a steep climb.
“This is clearly our best pickup opportunity,” a national Republican strategist working on Senate races told Semafor.
Republicans have a huge financial advantage in Michigan. And even with President Donald Trump’s plunging popularity, they also view the progressive El-Sayed as an opponent they can pick apart on the airwaves over his comments about immigration enforcement, the police, and “Medicare for All.”
Ed: Medicare for All is perhaps the least of the potential attack lines. Mike Rogers knows what El-Sayed's connections to the Muslim Brotherhood through his father-in-law mean. And the DSA's sudden emergence in the Democrat Party's "big tent" makes them an issue in every single election this cycle.

On Tuesday a democratic socialist, Donavan McKinney, took a safe Detroit congressional seat from a sitting Democrat, and Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive who is not a socialist, beat the party establishment’s candidate for Michigan’s Democratic Senate nomination. The Democratic Socialists of America says it passed 120,000 members, making it the largest socialist organization in American history. New York City is run by one.
Most of these voters are thinking about rent and hospital bills, not Mao. Almost no one votes on a movement’s foreign enthusiasms, so nobody asks who pays to keep those enthusiasms in circulation. Several are well funded.
Enter Neville Roy Singham, a former technology executive who made a fortune writing software for capitalism and lives in Shanghai spending it on people devoted to capitalism’s abolition. CBS News reported in July that a federal grand jury in Manhattan is investigating whether Singham broke tax laws and failed to register as a foreign agent. He has been charged with nothing, and he denies working for or taking instructions from any government or political party. There is no public evidence that the Chinese government funds or directs him; his fortune is his own, from the sale of his software firm in 2017.
The New York Times has traced at least $275 million into American nonprofits linked to Singham. The Times found four outfits with names like United Community Fund, almost no physical presence and addresses that turned out to be mailboxes at UPS stores. Some of the money reached the People’s Forum, a “movement incubator” named in the manner of a body that would convene you for self-criticism.

The Crimson Hub: In the wake of revelations by Senator Rand Paul that Dr Anthony Fauci kept a secret diary detailing discoveries made during the COVID-19 pandemic that allegedly conflicted with his public statements, top progressive non-profit MoveOn.org has announced a partnership with top Etsy seller “Crafting Cyndee” to gift every NIAID scientist a new Fauci-themed “lock and key” secret diary.
“These diaries will enable future NIAID leadership, as well as the rank-and-file corps of scientists, to better keep secrets about discoveries they have made that might conflict with their public statements or even congressional testimony regarding future pandemics,” a MoveOn.org spokesperson said in an exclusive interview with the Crimson Comedy Club.
“We don’t want those scientists putting everything on email, or typing it into a computer, where it can be so easily discovered again by pesky senators,” the spokeswoman added. “For generations, little girls across America have relied on traditional, ‘lock and key’ diaries to keep their secrets safe, and now, thanks to this partnership, people with reams of PhD and MD degrees will have that same opportunity.”

Jonathan Turley: Fauci will argue that such a general statement does not waive the privilege and that, when asked a question, he promptly and consistently invoked it.
Of course, this is the Trump Administration, not the Obama Administration. Ironically, if the matter is litigated, the Administration will be in the position of defending the pardon, which it has long questioned, as the result of Joe Biden’s infamous autopen. The ability to hold Fauci in contempt becomes dependent on that pardon being valid.
The Justice Department can argue that the Supreme Court has consistently held that the mere fear of a perjury charge is insufficient to compel witnesses who are immunized, dating back to 1896 in Brown v. Walker.
Moreover, the Supreme Court has held that “anticipatory perjury” is not a basis for such a refusal to testify in cases such as United States v. Apfelbaum.
However, Fauci can cite new state investigations as unaffected by the federal pardon, as well as new questions arising outside the pardon that could theoretically pose ongoing risks of criminal prosecution.
Courts have generally adopted broad interpretations to protect the right to remain silent, a touchstone of our legal system. That is why I believe Fauci likely has the edge in any challenge.
Ed: I suspect Professor Turley is correct, although I also believe that state investigations will falter because of the Supremacy Clause and the option for Fauci to move for removal of any attempted prosecutions to federal court. The proper jurisdiction for claims against federal officials in the course of their official duties is the federal courts. Fauci doesn't really face any potential criminal liability from the state and local level even without a pardon. Still, a judge will likely weigh the interests here and fall on the side of the individual protection of the Fifth Amendment.
