"During your time as Attorney General in California, you did send a brief seeking to deny gender affirmation surgery for trans inmates. You stated that at the time you were just enforcing the existing law," Lenz said. "But with this history, how can trans people trust that you'll advocate for them and not just enforce discriminatory laws?"

"When that case came up, I had clients, and one of them was the California Department of Corrections. It was their policy. When I learned about what they were doing, behind the scenes, I got them to change the policy," Harris said.

The Biden administration has signaled support for gender-affirming care behind bars outside of the manual. In 2021, the Department of Justice filed a statement of interest in support of Ashley Diamond, a transgender woman incarcerated in a Georgia state prison at the time, who sued twice for access to gender-affirming care.

But the administration will not confirm that BOP has provided the first gender-affirming surgery, nor whether it will shift to providing broader access to surgery in the future.

Ed: Harris definitely wanted taxpayer-funded sex-change surgeries for inmates as California AG, or so she claimed in 2019. Has she "moved to the center" on this too? Taxpayers may want to know before they cast ballots in the presidential election.

Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to make up ground with voters who still give former President Donald Trump an edge on the economy, airing a new ad this week that attempts to go on offense on inflation.

The ad, titled “Everyday” and first shared with POLITICO, features clips of Harris’ speech earlier this month in North Carolina, where she unveiled a series of proposals aimed at making housing more affordable, targeting corporations over price gouging and expanding a tax credit for families.

“Prices are still too high,” Harris said. “I will be laser-focused on creating opportunities for the middle class that advance their economic security, stability and dignity.”

Ed: Gee, who's been in office and in charge while prices shot through the roof? And who's in office now and can take whatever action is necessary to deal with the problem?

The Democratic National Convention is over, and the verdict is in: It was a remarkable heist. “They stole traditional Republican themes (faith, patriotism) and claimed them as their own,” the conservative Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan wrote. “Democrats Show That Republicans Aren’t the Only Ones Who Can Wrap Themselves in the Flag,” read a New York Times headline. “Speaker after speaker,” CNN reported, “struck themes that have long been hallmarks of Republican rhetoric: tributes to service, sacrifice, American leadership and, above all, a repeated reaffirmation of American exceptionalism.” Or, as The Washington Post put it, “Democrats claim patriotism, God and American exceptionalism at convention.”

Oh, wait—my mistake. Those last two quotes are from coverage of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, in Philadelphia, when Hillary Clinton accepted her party’s nomination. And they’re not the only part of last week’s DNC that felt like a rerun.

Former President Donald Trump honored those who died in the Afghanistan withdrawal three years after the chaotic Kabul withdrawal, joining families of the fallen in a private event at Arlington cemetery – while President Biden vacationed away from the White House for the second week in a row. ...

The White House had not published a statement at the time of publication on the anniversary on Monday. Biden is spending the week at his beach house in Rehoboth, Del., after spending the better half of last week vacationing in California. Vice President Kamala Harris has no public events on her schedule.

Ed: Despicable. We either have one or two commanders in chief at the moment, and both of them were AWOL for a memorial they created with an even more despicable bug-out from Kabul.

Ed: RHIP! I claim the literal Final Word tonight. I may need a better headset, though. This was on my landline.
