Today’s events had Larry O’Connor and I on the beaten path for a bit. We discuss the new Trump indictment out of Fulton County, and what it means for the 2024 election — and whether it gets to trial. Both of us have some skepticism over the charges, and Larry’s even more skeptical about the timing. After that, we talk about a new effort to rename the NFL team in Washington DC — and the surprising group behind the push to undo the previous name change to the Commanders. As I tell Larry, though, “Washington Commies” has a pretty true ring to it …

Welcome back to our VIP video series “Off the Beaten Path,” featuring my friend Larry O’Connor! The Townhall columnist and Salem News Channel host starts off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Larry previews tonight’s SNC show!
Highlights from today’s show include:
- “They had that weird middle-of-the-day list of charges,” Larry points out, “and then they said, Oh, this is fictitious, this is wrong. And then of course the charges did come out,” he continues, “and they looked exactly the same. And by the way, if there were fictitious charges posted on the Fulton County District Attorney’s web page, shouldn’t there be an investigation into who did that?”
- “Some of it is very substantial,” Larry says of the indictment itself, “but the fact that there is so much –I would say the majority of it is nonsense — that it sort of overshadows some of the significant stuff.” Larry also says that “it’s hard to take it seriously” when Willis includes as a conspiratorial act “taking to Twitter and telling people to watch a public hearing that is being televised.”
- We debate the timing of the indictment, and Larry scoffs at my half-joking suggestion that it’s meant to give GOP voters an out. “I don’t think out of the kindness of their heart [that they said] let’s let’s move this along so the Republicans have an alternative. Something tells me that was that part of the conversation.”
- Will this indictment prompt other GOP candidates to go after Trump directly in the next debate? Larry and I aren’t quite sure.
- What about the Washington Commies? “These are Native Americans who are petitioning for the ownership to reclaim the name Redskins,” Larry says. “And again they’re Native Americans and they are actually saying we are offended that you change the name.”
- Will the moral of the Spaceballs story determine the outcome of that effort? And stand by for a gratuitous swipe at Cleveland and Hugh Hewitt …
We have plenty more in the conversation, so watch it all and join us in the comments!
