Since Day One of the new Planned Parenthood scandal, Democrats have gone to the walls to defend the nation’s most prolific killer of human beings. For two examples from just yesterday: only two Senate Democrats voted for a bill that would shift Planned Parenthood’s federal funding to other organizations. And only days after she called the Planned Parenthood fetal harvesting videos “disturbing,” Hillary Clinton ran an ad that proclaimed defunding the abortion giant is “a full-on assault on women’s health…”
Meanwhile, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest has twice admitted that his comments about the scandal are parroted from Planned Parenthood.
And just what are Democrats (and some Republicans) using the power of government to make you pay for? Nothing less than death, destruction, and bad economics.
First, the obvious: Planned Parenthood is a prolific killer of people. More than 327,000 of them, officially, last year, and even more through “contraceptives” that are actually abortifacients.
Second, and nearly as obvious: Monday’s vote was a show vote that highlighted how the American people are funding Planned Parenthood’s lawbreaking. Whether a congressional investigation finds the sales of fetal parts were done illegally, it is very clear that illegal partial-birth abortions are being committed to get complete limbs and organs, and it is likewise clear that the style of abortion is modified to get complete baby parts — which is also illegal.
This is in addition to Planned Parenthood’s willingness to break state reporting laws when it comes to using rape victims and sex slaves for profit.
Third: Democrats have created an effective rhetorical tool — claiming that without Planned Parenthood’s federal funding, women will suffer. However, that tool really is just rhetoric; reality is very different. As Ed noted last week:
When markets have demand and resources to meet it, then suppliers will emerge. In fact, it may be that federal support and subsidies for Planned Parenthood has had the effect of squeezing smaller providers out the markets where they dominate.
In other words: an understanding of basic economics shoots down this talking point. The money would simply shift the federal government’s funding of abortions, poisonous contraceptives, and some beneficial health services to other organizations. Rather than a sharp stop in so-called “women’s health services,” there would be a minor transition.
Which brings us to another oft-cited falsehood: that Planned Parenthood is critical to American women. In fact, even if you accept the idea that abortion and contraception are morally just, data shows that Planned Parenthood is merely a decent-sized fish in a very big pond.
Again, via Ed:
According to the Government Accountability Office, the roughly 1,200 community health centers in the U.S. serve over 21 million people per year. Planned Parenthood, by contrast, serves 2.7 million people.
PolitiFact also hit this, knocking down Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s talking point (which Reid’s office admitted he got wrong):
Reid said Planned Parenthood is “the only health care that a significant number of women get. About 30 percent of women, that’s their health care.” That’s not the case — Planned Parenthood saw 2.7 million patients in 2013, not the 39 million it would have needed to see for Reid’s claim to be accurate. Even if every Planned Parenthood patient had no other health care options, the group would have seen about 2 percent of women, not 30 percent. His office acknowledged that Reid, making off-the-cuff remarks, got the talking point wrong. In this case, he really got it wrong. We rate the statement Pants on Fire.
Related, Planned Parenthood doesn’t provide mammograms, just recommendations for such. And since 86% of American women use contraceptives primarily or exclusively for birth control — according to that pro-life bastion, Guttmacher — the vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s 3, 577,348 poisonous and death-dealing contraceptive and abortifacient “services” are simply alternatives to sexual abstinence.
Which, you know, has that whole 100% success rate without the risks of glaucoma, death, blood clots, breast cancer, etc. — and it’s free!
A final point: In its last annual report, Planned Parenthood claimed that it provided nearly 11 million “services,” and just 3% of what it does is cutting open women to dismember and destroy their children. However, that number is — brace yourselves — a lie.
In fact, about 45% of Planned Parenthood’s “services” are potentially abortion-related — specifically, Planned Parenthood’s 327,653 abortions, its 3,577,348 contraceptives (which include abortifacients), and its 1,128,783 million pregnancy tests.
Former Live Action Communications Director Drew Belsky — currently a co-worker at LifeSiteNews — explained more in an e-mail:
Over 94% of Planned Parenthood’s “services” to pregnant women constitute abortions, so it’s hard to deny the connection between pregnancy tests and abortions at PP. When a woman gets a positive pregnancy test from Planned Parenthood, if she returns, she is overwhelmingly likely to have that child killed. Now for contraceptives: Planned Parenthood has been accused of intentionally prescribing low-dose birth control pills that are less likely to work, resulting in more pregnancies for Planned Parenthood to “terminate” for their already established customers.
Contraceptive failure, of course, brings abortion as a back-up, noted Drew:
Even with barrier methods, Planned Parenthood makes the suction machine and the forceps available as a “back-up” when those methods fail.
If you listen to the media, it’s the abortion-uncertain GOP that is the radical extremists when it comes to Planned Parenthood. However, actual evidence shows that it is the Democratic Party’s abortion-on-demand platform that is truly radical — not just because the party supports Planned Parenthood’s practice of murdering for profit, but also because it wants the weapons of government to make you pay for those deaths.
