How's It Going in Hungary?

I have no particular stake in Hungarian politics. 

I know Viktor Orbán was a favorite of some conservatives, largely because he was a vocal defender of Western culture, but I never got terribly interested in Hungarian politics. What struck me as most interesting was his willingness to take on the European Union from within, which in my book was a feather in his cap. 

Orban has always loved Hungary and Europe. The EU is fined Hungary €1 million a day for stopping criminal invaders at the border and for refusing to accept fake asylum seekers. The Left found Orbán to be a convenient foil, though. His cultural conservatism made him a target of hatred and bile, and one of the most common accusations was that he was "destroying democracy," which I read as mainly "not giving in to unelected technocrats in Brussels" who wanted to flood Hungary with migrants.

The EU put a target on Orbán's back years ago, and in the recent election, they finally got their wish. The Prime Minister was voted out of office, and did exactly what you would expect of a non-authoritarian. He left office quietly and without fuss, acknowledged his loss, and vowed to campaign for a return to power. 

So what are the great "defenders of democracy" doing to prevent that?

Today, prosecutors arrived without prior notice at the data center hosting Fidesz’s servers, intending to seize the party’s entire communications system and databases. Nothing like this has happened in Hungary since the end of communism in 1990.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Hungary’s Brussels-backed liberal authoritarian Prime Minister intends to eliminate his democratic political opponents, crush all resistance to his arbitrary actions, and use the country’s law enforcement authorities as instruments to achieve that goal.

The question is simple: Will there still be free elections in Hungary, or will anyone who dares to run against the Tisza Party simply end up in prison? 

Aren’t the enlightened Western politicians and opinion leaders who support this even remotely ashamed?

They are coming down like a ton of bricks on Orbán and his political party, following the now-familiar EU plan to subvert elections by canceling them if their candidates aren't likely to win, banning political parties, disqualifying candidates, and rigging the rules.

My understanding, based on news reports that may or may not be reliable, is that Orbán's government had a corruption problem, and that seems extremely plausible to me even though I don't know the specifics. He's been in and out of power for 20 years now, and history shows that any government or party with that much time in power becomes at least somewhat corrupt and benefits from a lot of self-dealing. 

Whatever is or was the case, it's pretty clear that Orbán was not the one who was a "threat to democracy," given that the current government is moving heaven and earth to keep him and his party from making its case to the Hungarian people. Just as the German government labeled AfD as a potential terrorist organization, or the French government tried to keep Marine Le Pen off the ballot, and the EU canceled the Romanian elections, the real authoritarian threat in Europe comes from the "defenders of democracy." Keir Starmer even tried to delay Council elections when it was clear Labour was going to get crushed.

Today, the President of Hungary released a dramatic video message announcing that the democratic rule of law in Hungary has come to an end because he was unlawfully removed from office. Nothing like this has happened in modern European history.

A puppet will now be installed in his place, but that person’s mandate will be illegitimate from the very beginning. At the same time, the governing parties have barred their political opponents from standing in future elections.

These are the very people who spent decades calling Viktor Orbán a dictator. Yet the moment they won a democratic election, they turned against both him and democracy itself. They did not act on their own. They did it with the support and at the direction of Brussels.

The European Union is increasingly behaving like a liberal authoritarian empire, determined to tell people what they may say, what they must do, and even whom they are allowed to vote for.

No person who truly values freedom can accept this.

This is part of a larger trend. We saw the same thing tried here, with the lawfare against Trump, the multiple attempts to keep him off ballots, and the massive efforts to get Trump-associated lawyers disbarred. 

All in the name of "defending democracy." 

Voters had a right to boot Orbán, and they did. They were tired of the corruption and made their feelings known, and Orbán accepted the will of the people. 

Unfortunately, it seems that in doing so they accidentally replaced him with a regime that doesn't respect the voters themselves, and which is trying to rip away their right to do the same to his replacement Péter Magyar. 

They didn't just vote out the old government; they apparently voted for an entirely new form of government—rule by European Union bureaucrats for whom they never voted. 

If you don't think something like this could happen here, look at the DSA platform, or listen to the Democrats prattle on about packing the Supreme Court. They absolutely want to rig the rules.
