Did Jonathan Chait get a lobotomy?
I don't think so, and whatever else he is, stupid is not an attribute I associated with him. So when I saw this tweet I about burst out laughing.
She was hired by the same people and for the same reasons as Kamala Harris, Ketanji Brown Jackson, dozens of federal judges and hundreds of agency appointees.

Is that really a rabbit hole you want to go down? Whether the various women of color hired by the Biden administration…
Chait is tweeting about Karine Jean-Pierre's interview with The New Yorker, in which she demonstrates—once again—that anybody who suggested that she is a midwit has been far too generous. She cannot answer the most basic questions without generating confusion--so much so that the woman who was hired to communicate for the President of the United States spent almost all her time trying to clear up misconceptions that she herself created.
Karine Jean-Pierre’s book subtitle is “a look inside a broken White House” but she is saying that she’s referring to the Trump White House, not the Biden one. https://t.co/w1cjI1uLQP pic.twitter.com/upanYkv2s6

To give you an idea of just how poor a communicator Jean-Pierre is, start with the title of her book: “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines." Literally 100% of the people reading that title would naturally assume that the "broken White House" she was referring to was the one she worked in, and that flamed out so spectacularly.
It's funny seeing so many liberal journalists now openly mocking Karine Jean-Pierre. Conservatives did that all through her disastrous tenure at the WH podium, but liberals were mostly silent. But now her incompetence can be told.
— Chuck Ross (@ChuckRossDC) October 27, 2025
That's certainly what Isaac Chotiner, who interviewed her, thought. Except, to everyone's surprise, she shares that the White House she is talking about is not the Biden White House, but Trump's.
Gee, does she have some insight from "inside" the Trump White House? Is anybody buying a book by Karine Jean-Pierre to discover the inside scoop about Trump?
And it gets worse from there. Jean-Pierre sells herself as an independent, but unsurprisingly, she is anything but. She is exactly what she has always been, with the added benefit of being pissed off that she and Joe Biden don't get the appreciation she thinks they deserve. She hasn't changed; she just thinks she deserves more love.
You lay out very clearly why you think Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. And, at the same time, you are suggesting that what happened in those three weeks was so serious that you had to leave the Democratic Party, even at this moment of grave threat. You said that the Party was trying to undermine Biden. What do you think they were doing and why?
Well, I mean, I just laid it out. I just said that there was an obvious campaign. You just had to watch.
Sure, but why were they doing that?
Because they believed that he needed to step aside. There’s more to this than just that period of time. This is very layered, right? There’s a period of time that I questioned what was happening and how do we treat our own, how do we treat people who are decent people? And then you also have to think about how I’m thinking about this as a Black woman who is part of the L.G.B.T.Q. community, and living in this time where I also don’t think Democrats right now, Democrats’ leadership, is protecting vulnerable people in the way that it should.
See what I mean? She claims that Trump is an existential threat to the world, but that means nothing compared to the Democratic Party not rallying around a guy who was vulnerable, just as she feels herself to be. Rather than "saving" the country, the Democrats should rally around the senile and the lesbian black immigrant. Damn the consequences, senile lives matter! She's black! She's lesbian! She's an immigrant!
So what if Biden was doomed!
Sorry, I’m not trying to be dense. I’m a little unclear about what this has to do with Democratic leaders and many Democrats in the country thinking that Joe Biden was going to lose to Donald Trump—which was what the polls all showed—and therefore thinking that he should be replaced.
O.K., wait a minute. Hold on a second. Nobody knows anything. Nobody knows what would’ve happened. People also thought that if you replace Joe Biden we were going to win, or have a better chance of winning. Millions of people who showed up in 2020 didn’t show up in 2024. We can’t forget that there was an incumbency issue as well. This is real. There are, like, several G-10 countries with incumbents who did not get reëlected. There was an incumbency issue as well.
I’m not sure what you’re saying.
No, no, no. Wait a minute. You are saying that this was their thinking, and they were kind of predicting. But nobody knew what was going to happen. Nobody knew that Joe Biden was going to win in 2020. Nobody knew what was going to happen in 2024. People believed in their hearts that Kamala was going to win. They believed it. They saw the polling and they thought she was going to win, looking at the polling. Nobody knew anything. I’m only bringing up the polls because you brought up the polls to me.
Her one job was to communicate for the president, and she couldn't do it. Now she is communicating for herself, and nobody with an IQ over 80 can quite follow her "reasoning." "I'm not sure what you are saying" is a kind way of saying "you make no sense at all."
"Wait a minute." "No, no, no, wait a minute." Those are tells--she can't communicate a coherent thought.
Which is what Chait is saying--how on earth did this dolt get the job?
Interviewer: " [Biden] talked way less to the press than Donald Trump does."

Karine Jean-Pierre's cover-up: "That's not true."
Left-wing journos: " It's different ... Trump is such an accessible president. Anytime the cameras are around it can turn into a press conference." pic.twitter.com/CXEsAsrqmK
Except...Jonathan Chait knows exactly how KJP got the job, and the same applies to so many people the Democrats elevate to the highest positions in the land. Jean-Pierre, in her incoherent way, said it herself: she was black, an immigrant, and a lesbian, as we were told a million times. She was a "first."
MSNBC host to Karine Jean-Pierre: “Do you have any regrets?”
— Steve Guest (@SteveGuest) October 27, 2025
KJP: “I woke up every day as a black woman who is queer.”
Beyond parody.

Hiring a "first," not a "best," was always the goal. DEI. It's how we got Ketanji Brown Jackson, who cannot say what a woman is and who thinks of herself as "disabled" because she is black. Competence is utterly beside the point, and Chait knows that.
Everybody does.

Democrats depend on everybody pretending not to know the most obvious things because admitting those things shatters an illusion that is core to their conception of the world. No reporter thought Karine Jean-Pierre was competent. Nobody in the White House thought she was competent. Anita Dunn desperately tried to find a way to get her out gracefully because KJP could not be fired--she is too black, queer, and an immigrant.
The Democratic Party denies that competence is a thing; only identity counts.
And then you also have to think about how I’m thinking about this as a Black woman who is part of the L.G.B.T.Q. community, and living in this time where I also don’t think Democrats right now, Democrats’ leadership, is protecting vulnerable people in the way that it should.
WTF? We are talking about the most powerful positions in the world—in this case, the presidency. And Karine Jean-Pierre thinks that the Democratic Party OWED Joe Biden the nomination despite his mental incapacity because he was "vulnerable?"
The fact that so many media and other Democrats acted as if Karinne Jean-Pierre was even REMOTELY competent is almost as much of a scandal as their cover-up of Biden’s mental acuity problems. pic.twitter.com/kFE4z2bmg3
— Mollie (@MZHemingway) October 28, 2025
His being "vulnerable" was the reason he never should have been there in the first place. You don't put a dotard in charge of the most powerful country and military in world history.
Brutal Dave Weigel review of Karine Jean-Pierre's White House memoir:
— Nick Field (@nick_field90) October 22, 2025
"A recurring theme: the White House press secretary getting so upset by the news it was her job to follow that she turned it off and 'nestled against the cushions of my living room couch.'” pic.twitter.com/bquoedwhdM
It is infuriating that someone as nominally smart as Chait pretends there is any reason other than DEI for Jean-Pierre's hiring, or remaining there after it became clear she was incapable. But he can't admit it, because it breaks the Narrative™. Instead of looking at reality and concluding, "Well, THAT didn't work," he pretends there is a mystery here.
Karine Jean-Pierre, a Haitian immigrant, has brutally culturally appropriated white women's hair!

There's no mystery. Identity politics is poison. It puts people, KJP, and Ketanji Brown Jackson in positions of responsibility when they are clearly incapable of fulfilling them.
Chait knows that. Everybody does at some level.
Good lord. Read this entire interview. It's hard to even begin to describe Karine Jean-Pierre's answers. They are largely incoherent, but one thing that does come through is that she is obsessed with loyalty and respect, and real problem in 2024 wasn't that Biden chose to run… https://t.co/5P1shIKQV9

It astounds me that so many people go through the kind of mental gymnastics necessary to ignore the obvious: Karine Jean-Pierre was a diversity hire. She sucked at her job, isn't very bright, can't talk her way out of a paper bag, and yet Democrats applauded her hiring despite knowing all that.
Democrats: if you have some guilt issues you need to work out about race or gender, go see a psychologist. But quit imposing DEI on the rest of us.
