I think Andrew Cuomo was a hideously bad governor, with a taste for authoritarian rule.
But, as they sometimes say, he was hideous within normal bounds. He was the sort of governor you could have found running a liberal state 30 years ago. His government was voracious in sucking up taxes, spendthrift in spending them, corrupt in the ways that governments tend to be, and bullied citizens frequently. His policies were destructive and wound up killing a lot of people.
And yet, compared to the alternative of Zohran Mamdani, he would be a godsend, because he would be awful in a normal way. His tax policies would follow the principle set out by Louis XIV--pluck the maximum amount of feathers from the goose in a manner that generates the least hissing. In other words, he wouldn't kill the goose the lays the golden eggs.
Zohran Mamdani, as a socialist, wants to kill and eat the goose. Capitalism is the goose, and he sees the yummy meat, the warm feathers, and wants it all now. While neither understands that breeding the geese is the smart move, at least Cuomo will let it live.
Hence the civil war in the Democratic Party. The one side of the war sees America as a resource to be exploited for its own benefit, the other wants to kill the whole system and live off the corpse until it is gone.
NEW: NYC mayoral candidate and former governor Andrew Cuomo says there’s an “ongoing civil war” inside the Democratic Party:

The irony is that in today's Democratic Party, Cuomo IS the moderate. So is Kathy Hochul, or Gretchen Whitmer. They would have been considered radical in the Clinton years, but as the Democratic Party has become the Democratic Socialists of America in all but name, any Democrat who doesn't want to line up Republicans and shoot them in the manner of Hamas is practically a conservative.
The thing is: Cuomo's side is losing the civil war. The Hochuls and the Whitmers might win elections using the power of incumbency, but its very clear that the radical socialists are ascendant. Chuck Schumer--who ought to be one of the most powerful Democrats in the country--is rightfully running scared of AOC. And New York, for all its lefty reputation, is not Oregon or California where the Democrats have been insane for a long time.
New York, too, was liberal within normal bounds. Liberals wanted high taxes, moderately corrupt government to distribute the wealth, but also wanted businesses to stay around to be milked for money.
The new breed of Democrats hate America and Americans, and are quite open about it. Zohran Mamdani, campaigning to be Mayor of New York City, pals around with Hasan Piker who openly says America deserved 9/11 and muses about gutting the entrails out of capitalists, and just campaigned with an Imam who was an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Radical chic is back in vogue, only the radicals are no longer the fringe but the core of the Democratic Party now.
Unfortunately, Curtis Sliwa, the Republican in the race, doesn't have a chance in hell to win the race. The mayor's race is between the corrupt old guard and the radical new guard, and the radicals have the upper hand.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
