One year ago today, Thomas Crooks almost assassinated Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

It was a shocking day, and one that showed the country the mettle of the once and future president. We already knew he was unafraid to take on the Washington swamp, the Pravda Media, and all the people who dish out hatred toward him and his supporters.

But, as they used to say: sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt me.

Bullets will, though, and Trump's reaction to getting shot was amazing. Badass, as Mark Zuckerberg said.

It's not every 78-year-old man who can pop up off the floor after taking a bullet and shout "fight, fight, fight." It's hardly any person at all who could do it, in fact. At that moment, it seemed like Trump was unstoppable.

Democrats have been trying to stop Trump for 10 years now, and thought they had in 2020. When that failed, they threw every bit of lawfare at him and failed to stop him. The interim President of the United States--that vile man whom the Washington Establishment installed as the autopen president--spent four years railing about Trump and his supporters.

And they couldn't stop him. The establishment threw $2 billion into a vile campaign of slander, backed by hundreds of hours of Pravda Media smears and fake polling, and they couldn't stop him.

And, worst of all, the Department of Homeland Security failed to protect Trump adequately when they had intelligence that assassins were stalking Trump. Alejandro Mayorkas, perhaps the worst villain of the Biden Administration, committed malfeasance, failing to protect Trump as was his duty.

And still they failed to stop him.

The best-case scenario in Butler was that Mayorkas' Secret Service was outrageously negligent in their duties. The worst-case scenario is that the people at the top hoped the assassins would be successful.

In either case, the American people have more than adequate reason to expect that heads would roll.

They didn't.

Instead, six agents were suspended without pay for between 10 and 42 days. The man in charge of the protection details was elevated — temporarily, under Mayorkas —to head the Secret Service.

This is how the government works. Anthony Fauci, who allegedly engineered a cover-up of his involvement in creating COVID-19 and directed policies that harmed millions of lives and divided the country, received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, a prestigious appointment at a university, and a considerable pension.

Lack of accountability in government is not a particularly American disease. Quite the opposite. The Founders understood that abuse of power is a universal phenomenon, and the solution was to ensure government was limited in scope and power and had competing power bases to check and balance each other.

Those checks and balances have eroded over time, as government has inexorably grown.

America is still a beacon of hope--for all the accusations that our country is irredeemably evil, half the world wants to live here. But it's no secret why the population is migrating to the Red states. The slick, aristocratically run Blue states are committing suicide by concentrating power and enabling its abuse.

California politicians are eager to import child labor to work at pot farms, and are deeply offended that the president is taking away their slaves.

The media works mightily to back them up, even to the point of justifying assaults and murders of ICE agents.

I agree that it is sad that Trump and Tom Homan have been forced to send ICE agents into our cities to round up illegal aliens. But my outrage is directed at Alejandro Mayorkas, who opened our borders and lied about the border being secure for his entire tenure.

The same Alejandro Mayorkas who almost got Donald Trump killed.
