When it comes to reining in the left, there is H.O.P.E that we can learn a lesson from this story.

Christopher Rufo reported the great news that the University of Michigan was eliminating its DEI programs, bowing to the demands of President Trump that they quit violating Civil Rights laws by discriminating against people based on race, gender, sexuality, or national origin.

Victory!

Yeah, well, not so much. The left has H.O.P.E., which is just a rebranding of DEI under a new name, new job descriptions, but the same old vinegar repackaged as fine wine.

In the world of critical theorists, names are everything. Words are magic. Radical jihadi terrorists who rampage through music festivals, raping, murdering, torturing and kidnapping people are really victimized children against whom genocide is being committed. Racial discrimination is social justice, firebombing is "peaceful protest," and shooting people in the back for political reasons is heroic protest.

Changing the term DEI to HOPE is child's play. HOPE sounds good, right?

As centrists lecture us that we should pussyfoot around, making minor tweaks to fundamentally broken systems, the reality is that nothing but a sledgehammer will work to reform any leftist institutions. Negotiating reforms with leftists is like asking the Ayatollahs in Iran or the terrorists of Hamas to come sit down and reason with us.

Uh, no. That only works at New England town halls, not when dealing with zealots who see every battle as existential.

Critical theorists have good intentions in the way that Islamists and communists do: they have a vision of the good, and that vision includes destroying you and me. There is no intersection of the great Venn Diagram where we can find a compromise, and living in the illusion that there is just ensures that they will eventually destroy what we value.

Like our university systems, which are being destroyed. Find a scientist over 40 or 50 who won't privately admit that their discipline is rotting away. They exist, but they are getting rarer because the disciplines are rotting away. Even physicists are talking about the fundamental racism and sexism of Black Holes, colonialism in the naming conventions of stellar and galactic phenomena, and how gravity is a social construct.

I see no way to gently reform a system so fundamentally compromised, although I also see no way to destroy and rebuild one without doing enormous damage. Perhaps the best we can do is build a parallel system and slowly strangle the current one of funds.

One thing is clear, though: the current system has an apparently incurable cancer called critical theory. Many of us saw this coming but were ignored--there is no point in crying, "I told you so," because the patient is still dying. The best we can do is push aside the people who allowed this to happen and go to work with radical surgery and drastic treatments, hoping to save the patient.

Is there still H.O.P.E.? Let's hope so.
