I am assigned the role of being the dour critic of speeches and debates, but this time I can't find a bad thing to say about Donald Trump's speech last night.
Not one damn thing. It was quite literally the best speech before Congress ever, and that is saying a lot. I watched all Reagan's SOTU speeches, and they were great. But Trump really took these speeches to a new level by avoiding the "laundry list" approach to SOTU speeches and instead leaned into a different Reagan innovation: telling the American story through focusing on ordinary Americans and what brings us together.
They can't even be bothered to applaud capturing a terrorist that murdered Americans.

Trust me, NORMAL Americans will see that and glean something from it.https://t.co/8GrEiR20OS
The absolute highlight of the speech came when Trump featured DJ, the young man with brain cancer who always wanted to be a police officer. Sean Curran, the head of the Secret Service, was instructed by Trump to name him a Secret Service agent and the moment made me, and millions of others, weep for joy.
Which brings us to the other major feature of the night. Democrats, who decided that anything related to Trump in any way is evil, sat on their hands as the rest of America cheered and teared up for a brave young man.
Trump said in the beginning that Democrats would refuse to clap for any achievement. He was exactly right.

Democrats refused to clap for:
- Little boy battling cancer
- Cracking down on crime
- Helping working families
- Catching terrorists who killed Americans
- Destroying… https://t.co/DYk3wtkAl5
They sat there looking more dour than I often am.
As Trump's rhetoric soared in a way that is so unusual for him, Democrats decided to boo police officers, cheer on Tren de Aragua, and show disapproval for Trump designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorists.
Have been in the House chamber for the speech as I have for many. Have not seen an opposition party mount a protest like tonight. House and Senate Democratic leaders didn’t join the escort committee for the president. Dems turned their back on him when he entered the chamber and didn’t shake his hand. They didn’t applaud virtually anything. Several walked out in the middle of the speech.Lots of signs in the back being held up by Dem members — and repeated shouts of “lies” and “you’re lying.”And a Dem member — Al Green — was escorted out by the House sergeant-at-arms for interrupting Trump for an extended period. Dem leaders endorsed the no-applause strategy. But Jeffries and his deputies urged members against signs and props and loud outbursts.
Democrats proved that they have yet to learn how to read the room. Trump's speech was uncharacteristically upbeat for a man who often rails against what ills America. He was sunny, proactive, funny, and charming.

He praised Americans who have made our country great, comforted those who have been injured by fate or malice, and embraced our better angels and promised a better future.
So how did Democrats react to Trump giving a young man dying of cancer his Secret Service badge? "Disgusting," said Rachel Maddow.

You can't hate these people enough.
Democrats chose to look sullen and angry at every applause line, no matter how uncontroversial. An American brought home from a brutal Russian prison? How terrible, the Democrats seem to say. He must have deserved it because Trump helped bring him home. The Democrats wouldn't even applaud Laken Riley's mom and acknowledge her suffering, because apparently that would make illegal aliens look bad or something.
It makes little sense Democrats did not stand for Laken Riley’s mom and sister. They just sat there. If they think the people back home didn’t notice they’re wrong. pic.twitter.com/LpABP9w0Dd

Politically, Democrats walked right into Donald Trump's political trap. He baited them with humor, and they responded with radiated hate directed not just at him but everything he praised, including things and people every American supports. He called on our better natures, and they rebuffed him.

But it turned out all we really needed was a new president."

Trump didn't shy away from partisan digs, but they were aimed at Biden, a target we can all agree deserves disdain. Democrats as much as anyone should despise Biden given that he led them into the political wilderness, but apparently they are determined to wander in that political desert for the next forty years as they worship the golden transgender calf.

Major Garrett of CBS gave what seemed an insightful take on the speech:

CBS's Major Garrett on President Trump's address: "So, I've learned to be humble about analyzing speeches like this because the country often catches on to things that those of us in Washington might not sift the way the country does. When the President listed things that he thought were extravagant examples of wasteful spending, those of us around this table might say, well, that's not going to be enough, even if you cut all that to balance the budget which is $840 billion, out of balance. Americans will hear it and say wait a minute, those things found wasteful to me. Sounds like Elon Musk and the President are onto something. There was also tremendous emotive power in several parts of the speech and I think it will resonate across the country, whether it's Lake Riley slain, her mother and sister or Marc and his mother, Malphine Fogel, rescued, brought back from Russia, or a Border Patrol agent Roberto Ortiz, or Stephanie Diller, the surviving spouse of a slain New York City police officer. Those things carry emotional weight not only the moment, but probably, inevitably in the pass around social media dissection of the speech. I keep my eyes and ears tuned to emotional moments like that that often jump over the instantaneous Beltway analysis."
Democrats project their emotional reaction, which was hate. Trump, on the other hand, came off as optimistic and even loving of ordinary Americans. I know which one I think people will gravitate toward.
Just as Zelenskyy committed the worst own-goal in diplomatic history last Friday, the Democrats committed one of the worst I have seen in a long time.

The only way they could have made it worse was to ask Kamala Harris to give the SOTU rebuttal, but even they were not that stupid.
Democrats refused to clap or stand for this little boy battling cancer.
