Border? What Border?

There’s been a lot going on in the news lately, but I have kept one eye on the goings-on at the southern border.

Just because there are wars outside the United States that catch the eye changes nothing about the importance of our border crisis.

And it is a crisis. A huge crisis, and even if the flow of migrants stopped tomorrow, the US will be dealing with the effects for years to come. Like increased prices after a surge of inflation, the huge bump in the number of migrants won’t decrease the significant burden of the illegals who have already arrived.

Since Joe Biden was inaugurated, uncounted millions (I mean this term literally) of illegal migrants have crossed into the United States. The number of migrants who have turned themselves into the Border Patrol is staggering, but then there are the millions more about whom we know nothing because they are “gotaways,” meaning that they are uncounted and unknown.

And it’s not like every migrant who turned himself in is a model citizen. Law enforcement has caught people on the terrorist watch list, felons, child molesters, and all types of unsavory folks. If we are catching these folks, just who is crossing the border more surreptitiously? We don’t know, but we sure should want to.

Migrants are streaming in at staggering rates–millions a year–and both the immigration system and the social service systems of our states and cities are being crushed under the weight of numbers. That cities such as New York and Chicago, and states like Arizona–all places run by liberal Democrats–are sounding alarm bells and openly criticizing President Biden tells you the scope of the problem.

It is almost as if those Republican governors weren’t just whining when they set off alarm bells and were ridiculed for it. When Republicans criticized Biden’s immigration policies, they were racist xenophobes; now that Democrats are dealing with the same issues, the tune has changed.

Many Americans have awakened and understand the scale and nature of the problem, but then again, many have yet to realize that illegal immigration today doesn’t resemble that of the 1970s or 80s. We aren’t seeing primarily poor Mexican families crossing to pick crops and send some money home; today’s migrants are primarily young men from nearly every country in the world, including from regions very hostile to the United States. At least some of those illegals are here not to do well for themselves but to do harm to the rest of us.

To think otherwise would be naive. The primary reason to oppose mass illegal immigration is practical. There are just so many immigrants even a country like the US can absorb without the burden becoming crushing to the larger population. As many benefits as there are to controlled immigration–and indeed, there are many–there can be and is too much of a good thing. We are well past that point, and even the Biden Administration must know that, at least in an abstract sense.

But for some reason, they honestly don’t care about the damage they are doing to the country.

I have often argued that Democrats were perfectly fine with the massive influx until the migrants started showing up at their doorstep asking for that promised sanctuary, and I still think that is true for local elected officials. They are hypocrites of the first order. But now that those Democrats are screaming at Biden to do something, the Administration still cares not a whit. They are fighting to the last man to ensure that the border remains open, despite the high price being paid by their allies.

This is something that Biden and Mayorkas had planned on years ago and were unafraid at the time to say out loud. Biden celebrated the fact that Whites of European stock were being replaced (yes, the great replacement theory is based on verifiable facts). While there is nothing inherently superior about people of European descent, I think most Americans can agree that there is something inherently superior about the set of cultural and political values embodied by America, and the “unrelenting flow” of migrants isn’t just or primarily intended to replace the genetic stock, but the culture itself.

I don’t care about somebody’s skin color, but I care deeply about their values and political expectations. Turning America into Venezuela or Yemen shouldn’t be a goal but a fate to be avoided at almost any cost. And given that America’s non-native-born population exceeds that at any time in US history, that is a great threat. A huge chunk of our population hasn’t grown up in an environment suffused with American values.

As far as I can tell, when the Biden Administration talks about addressing the border crisis and pouring money into border “security,” they mean only that they want more resources to process illegal migrants into the country. Their solution isn’t slowing the flow, but regularizing it. I suspect that many people have assumed that the heightened rhetoric coming from both Republicans and Democrats about the border issue is driven by the typical political wrangling, not a fundamental conflict of values.

They are very wrong. Biden likes the open border; Republicans want to stanch the flow. That doesn’t mean stopping legal immigration, but controlling it through legal means.

I do now and always have believed that America has benefited from the infusion of “new blood.” Not for some ridiculous ideological notion that “diversity is our strength,” since that is only true when it comes to restaurant choices, but because immigrants have traditionally made up a substantial fraction of the entrepreneurial class. Historically speaking, America has benefited a great deal from high-achieving immigrants.

But if immigrants leaven the bread of our economy, too large a dose makes the bread indigestible, and we are way past that point. Immigrants who come for the American dream often do very well, but ask Mayor Adams about what it takes to digest a flow of migrants who are seeking not a chance at the American Dream but a nice hotel room, a new phone, and walking around money.

It’s abundantly clear that nothing but losing the next election will stop the Biden Administration from keeping the border open. Nothing will persuade Biden to enforce our immigration laws, and the only solution is a great replacement of our political class.
