Sunday Smiles

‘Tis the season,” we are told. And for many of us, it is the season of celebration.

But even in this, our country is divided. For Christians, the fact that the world has fallen is a given, and hence, there is no reason to reject the joy simply because all is not right with the world. All will never be right in the temporal world, yet God loves us nonetheless, and we should try to love each other.

The Abrahamic religions have at their root the recognition that the world we inhabit will never be made into a utopia, and it is foolish to try. It is a good insight, at least if it is married to the belief that we should focus our energies on improving our little corner of the world and ourselves.

Many in the West have rejected God and hence are busily trying to remake the world, and in doing so, they are trying to remake mankind. Utopian ideologies inevitably degenerate into totalitarian tyrannies because the only way to create a utopia is to eliminate dissenters, force people who are square pegs into round holes, and eventually remove the inconvenient among us from society.

Sound familiar?

The irony of the utopia chasers is that they always make things much worse, not only for the dissenters but for everybody. Communism is the most famous utopian ideology, and look at what it creates.

Tolerance for the flaws in the world and in each other doesn’t require us to be passive; what it does require us to be is patient. We can work for a better world and push others to be better people without being angry all the time.

This is a lesson I hope the younger folks who have embraced the Left will learn at some point.
