Trump Bans CNN, Politico and MS-Now From the White House

Huh.

I think this had something to do with David's earlier post about 'Totally Objective Journalism'. Perhaps, instead, it was his 'Democrats Need Not Fear the Fact Checkers' piece.

Both are perfectly germane to the situation.

Or as Professor Reynolds always says:

HEH

I do like the take that The Independent has on their site.

'Oooh, this is very bad because now no one will ask Trump tough questions!'

Trump ‘bans’ CNN and other media groups from White House for reporting of ‘FAKE NEWS’

Unprecedented action threatens to further insulate president from any direct critical questioning

Really? As opposed to what? The searing, wickedly cutting interrogatories that Biden or Obama were forced to answer from that same press?

Well, I mean, when they weren't slobbering over him.

Well, needless to say, long faces and noses out of joint.

WE'RE TOTALLY LEGIT!!

President Donald Trump on Friday claimed to have “banned” three of the country’s most prominent news outlets from the White House, taking a page from authoritarian leaders by attempting to limit coverage of his administration by legitimate journalists as his and his party’s popularity continue to crumble as the midterm elections approach.

Writing on Truth Social, the president said he would “effective immediately” be “banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW ... and Politico ... from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS.”

Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” he added.

All of the outlets mentioned by the president are legitimate and reputable news organizations with long histories of aggressive and independent reporting under both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Dollars to donuts, there are federal judges tripping over their robes as they fly to their desks to be the first to get a restraining order out.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT - THEY'RE TOTALLY LEGIT

Bloomberg was more sonorous in their pronouncement.

President Donald Trump said he would ban cable news outlets CNN and MSNOW as well as online publication Politico from the White House, a move that strikes at the heart of First Amendment protections for the news media.

So apparently X is in meltdown over this - you can't search Trump or any of the associated media platforms.

The French outlet France 24 noted that the Associated Press and others are still suing over being pushed out of smaller press scrums, and now they have to deal with this, too?

So sad.

It follows Trump’s decision in February 2025 to keep Associated Press journalists out of the Oval Office, Air Force One and other events too small for a full press corps, in retaliation for the news outlet’s decision not to follow his lead in changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name.

The AP filed suit and the case is ongoing.

Trump has long bristled at news coverage he sees as unfavorable to him and has a history of filing lawsuits against news organizations and lashing out at individual reporters in person or over social media.

Since returning to office, Trump has pursued legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC and other news outlets.

It is extremely rare for US presidents to bar news outlets from the White House altogether, although Trump banned a CNN reporter in his first term and Richard Nixon put restrictions on the Washington Post for its reporting on the Watergate scandal.

Nice tying Trump to Nixon and not mentioning what Obama did to reporters like James Rosen. Or that the legal actions Trump has taken against those media outlets have resulted in settlement payments or judgments in his favor.

Hmmmmm. That is generally considered to be indicative of the merits of the complaint, aka Trump was right.

The reporters for the outlets being summarily booted today were kind of confused about whether this edict was #ForRealz or not.

...Reporters were overheard at the White House when the news broke asking if this was a 'Trump hissy fit' or a real decision.

It is unclear what this means moving forward for access.

The White House was reached out to for comment on this story but did not immediately respond.

Whatever it is, it is hilarious.

And there are quite a few fingers pointing at Kaitlan Collins for being one of the guilty parties precipitating this.

I have to admit, she makes my teeth grind sometimes.

...Right-wing influencer Nick Sortor posted on social media after the update saying the CNN ban was a positive development because it 'was LONG overdue.'

Sortor wrote: 'Kaitlan Collins in particular is EXTREMELY rude and REGULARLY interrupts President Trump in the Oval Office.'

This decision from President Trump will likely face legal challenges from the media organizations that are involved in the White House ban.

It will come as welcome news to the poor, besieged, and abused national media that they have backup waiting in the wings.
