That attempted robbery on San Francisco 49er wide receiver Ricky Pearsall this past Saturday was pretty shocking. Broad daylight in a ritzy section of downtown and a cocky 17-year-old with a gun who picked the wrong pigeon to pick a Rolex from.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery in Union Square late Saturday afternoon.

Pearsall, the 49ers’ first-round pick in the latest NFL draft, was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition, according to a team statement.

The suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, was immediately apprehended and arrested by police. During the struggle, the suspect was also shot and is currently being treated at the same hospital, police reported.

Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said he was briefed by a police captain who confirmed that Pearsall resisted his assailant, resulting in the suspect being wounded with his own gun.

“He wasn’t having any of it,” the captain told Peskin.

Can't imagine why said teenager would feel so emboldened. Why would a 17-year-old feel like daylight banditry could be a career option in the retail commerce center of town?

Probably because the city had already given him permission - basically told him so by its previous actions.

Oh, well, in that case. In the softer hearts of progressives, sometimes it's not a gang - it's a club!

And things can go awry on club outings when kids are in high spirits and pret-tee things distract them that are...shiny. 

...Documents show Pearsall was wearing a white gold chain valued at $30,000 and a Rolex valued at $9,000 on his wrist. He wore them during an autograph signing earlier in the day.

If the children weren't taught the Golden Rule or to keep their hands to themselves, it's not their fault. And they get all shook up and things just, you know - "go wrong."

...In the video, obtained by ABC7 News Anchor Dion Lim, you can see a group of people frantically running down Geary Street at 3:33 p.m. on Saturday.

Fifteen seconds after the group runs by, surveillance shows a figure dressed all in black also running. He drops a gun, identified by officers as an unregistered glock, and is clutching his left arm. He walks across the street, where he encounters SFPD.

According to the police report obtained by Lim, an officer noticed the young man's arm was bleeding. He then asked, "who shot you? Do you know who did this? What's your name?" The young man didn't respond.He's then taken into custody.

Ah, the unrestrained impulses of exuberant youth sometimes result in unintended but entirely predictable consequences.

...During a brief hearing at San Francisco Juvenile Court, a probation official recommended that the suspect, a 17-year-old Tracy resident, be transferred to San Joaquin County, where he faces an offense that was not described in court. But Judge Roger C. Chan ordered the suspect held at the Juvenile Justice Center in San Francisco’s West of Twin Peaks neighborhood while the case advances.

The teen was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and attempted second-degree robbery. Gun-related charges were added Wednesday.

But, like the song says, "Who's sorry now?" This little man, for one.

...At the hearing, the high school senior wore a green uniform and bandages on his left arm where he was apparently shot. His parents were in court — his mother used a Spanish interpreter — as were Pearsall’s relatives and about two dozen journalists. While the boy’s identity is being protected because of his age, the proceedings were held in the open because of the seriousness of the alleged crimes.

...“He’s very sorry, genuinely, that this did happen, as is his family,” Dunlap said during a press conference. “And I can say on their behalf, as well as on my own behalf, our thoughts go out to the Pearsall family and Mr. Pearsall himself.”

Which, in the best San Franistan progressive tradition, just might keep him out of adult court if he tugs at that District DA's heartstrings enough to keep her from transferring his case to adult court. He's young, and he's a minority - that's like the Get Out of Jail Free ticket there.

The lad's lawyer is arguing that it shouldn't matter who the teen shot because this sort of incident doesn't rise to the threshold for a transfer - it was only attempted murder, etc - and that the DA has been very brave not allowing the "status of the victim" to influence her decision. Besides, all the press about the shooting - how is that fair to the shooter's family? Their sweet baby boy didn't know the man he came damn close to killing was anyone special. He only wanted his watch and chain, plus maybe whatever was in the Louis Vuitton bag the guy was carrying.

...“All the media attention — even nationwide media attention — is a lot,” Dunlap added. “That’s a lot for the family to process and a lot to be on your shoulders.”

Give this poor immigrant family a break already.

As they are also in the thick of a mayoral race in the city, it is also now time to "do something."

Regular citizens are getting victimized, harassed and robbed every day of the week in San Francisco, but now it happened to an IMPORTANT PERSON, so maybe it's time to do something. They're YEARS overdue on "getting serious."

That wasn't the only violent kerfuffle in the 'Stan this weekend, although, granted, the highest-profile incident. 

The repeat crazies for which the city is becoming universally known were out in force. One of them jumped a chef who had starred in a Netflix show and got more than he bargained for.

Now, while Wendy Drew came out of the mad scuffle looking worse for the wear, the real shocker is not that this lunatic had been arrested for this sort of thing before because? San Francisco - of course, he had!

South Africa-born Wendy Drew, who appeared in the limited series “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,” told The Standard she had just left Cafe Terminus in the Financial District, where she had been at a business meeting until around 9:30 p.m., when a man called her a racial slur. 

“I said, ‘Why are you calling me that? Why?’ Then he turns and starts hitting me on the head. He punched me like three times on the head. I’m like, you’re not going to get away with hitting me,” Drew said. 

The chef, who is Black, pulled the attacker, who was walking a dog, into a Drumm Street liquor store, where they struggled while she screamed for onlookers to call 911. 

“I basically had him in a bear hug. I had my legs around him, and he kept trying to get away,” she said. “His dog comes by. I thought the dog wants to bite me, but the poor thing was just licking my face. I loosened my grip, and that’s when he started repeatedly punching me in the face.”

...Rivera-Lara was arrested on suspicion of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, committing a hate crime, and providing false information to an officer. The 31-year-old was arrested last year on suspicion of attacking the co-owner of a Haight Street sandwich shop who had confronted him for urinating on trash cans near the eatery. Rivera-Lara later reconciled with Sandy’s Muffs proprietor Peterson Harter after spending months in jail.

No, it's watching the video as the attack goes down and what the people in the bodega it rolls into do in reaction.

This is gobsmacking. Got to tend to those chip racks, by George.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that the folks in the neighborhood have 1) become pretty inured to violence, 2) are aware of the dangers of stepping in to help their fellow man, and 3) that San Francisco's finest might well - if and when they show up - choose to charge them for the assist rather than the bad guy for the assault.
