Senator John Fetterman just keeps surprising those of us who had him pegged as a progressive weirdo.

It turns out that on the really important issues of the day, he’s a sane person. During his campaign, he was presented as the progressive alternative to the Republican candidate endorsed by Donald Trump. Pennsylvanians knew Fetterman as their Lt. Governor at the time. The Republican candidate, Dr. Oz, was a dud. That race became another Republican loss in the list of losses suffered since 2018. Fortunately, this year the Republican candidate that should have been the party’s nominee in that race is running and hopefully will win.

Anyway, during that campaign Fetterman suffered a life-threatening stroke. Somewhere along the line during his recovery and his treatment for clinical depression, he has abandoned the dark side and sounds a lot more conservative than he used to.

For example, Fetterman is stellar in his support of Israel. Ever since the massacres committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023, he has been out front and vocal in his support of Israel. He has not wavered in the least and defiantly waves the Israeli flag in the faces of anti-Israel protesters. It is fabulous.

Look at what he did Friday night. Anti-Israel protesters showed up at his home in Pennsylvania. As they did their thing, chanting their nonsense and holding a Palestinian flag, what did Fetterman do? He went up to the roof and held up an Israeli flag.

I love that so much.

Perhaps you are familiar with a popular song from 1962 recorded by The Drifters. “Up on the Roof” was co-written by one of my favorites, Carole King. These lyrics from the song came into my mind as I read about Fetterman’s response to the protesters.

When this old world starts getting me down,
And people are just too much for me to face—
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space .

I think we can all agree that 2024 is starting out in crazytown. We are living in an upside-down world. The president is refusing to do his duty to protect the homeland and moving right up to the line where a civil war breaks out between the Biden administration’s open border policies and red states who align with Texas Governor Abbott. The president is publicly supporting Israel while privately telling Bibi Netanyahu to wrap it up with his defense of Israel against Hamas. Government staffers are making demands of the president. The inmates are running the asylum in Biden’s America.

It is pleasantly surprising when a progressive Democrat declares himself a regular kind of Democrat, not a progressive, as Fetterman recently did. On important matters, he shows courage and does the right thing. Congressional Democrats have been overtaken by the progressive wing of the party. Fetterman doesn’t care. I don’t know what has happened to him but somehow it looks like that stroke he had and his recovery have caused a change for the good. Whatever it is, I hope it continues.

He’s made me like him. I no longer cringe at the mention of his name. Sure, he’s still a Democrat and votes for Biden’s agenda but credit where credit is due. He’s right on some issues and not afraid to speak up for sanity. He supports border security. He’s with Israel. He is even speaking out against government over-regulation. What?

He’s ready for a superhero cape. His moral clarity is in place and he’s one Democrat who is not afraid to be sane in a world of insanity. More, please.
