It’s debate time. The RNC’s third debate takes place tonight in Miami. Some Biden campaign surrogates converged on the city to do some pre-debate mean girl-style criticism.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker must have solved all of his state’s problems and had some free time. He held a press conference where he delivered a lame attack on the “MAGA Republicans” who will be on the debate stage. He said that no matter what they disguise themselves with, they are pushing the same “extreme MAGA agenda.”
During a press conference ahead of the third Republican presidential primary debate, Pritzker fed into some of the jokes and criticism claiming Gov. DeSantis wears lifts in his cowboy boots to appear taller.
‘The MAGA agenda isn’t an agenda about freedom – it’s about fear,’ Pritzker said from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) post 1991 in Miami, Florida. ‘Everyone in this Republican primary believes in this agenda.’
‘They might try to dress it up in different ways – in boots, in high heels or a red tie – but it’s all the same,’ he said to laughter from the few attending the press conference along with a room-full of press.
Poor J.B. Can you imagine the governor of a midwestern state flying down to Miami to tease the Florida governor about boots and possible lifts in those boots? Naturally he had to drag some union members to stand behind him and hold up signs. Pritzker was joined by B-List Democrats, Biden-Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez and Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried.
It’s interesting that they concentrated spreading vitriol against Ron DeSantis and not Trump. Perhaps Pritzker is envious of the successful record DeSantis has in Florida. Fried unsuccessfully ran for governor. They blasted DeSantis’ Florida blueprint. Pritzker said that that blueprint would be a disaster for the country.
But Pritzker acknowledged that all of the candidates tout the same agenda.
‘We’re, of course, here in Florida to talk about the debate that’s going to happen tomorrow night,’ he noted. ‘And we’re at the ground zero point of the MAGA agenda, and that’s why I’m here.’
The debate stage will be less crowded for RNC debate number 3. Besides DeSantis, the other Republican candidates will be Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Tim Scott, and Chris Christie. Haley is aggressively going after DeSantis for the number two slot in polling, trying to push aside DeSantis. So, she attacked his boot-wearing, too.
‘Are you wearing higher heels than Ron DeSantis next week at the debate so that you can look taller than him on the stage?’ Daily Show guest host Charlamagne tha God questioned Haley during an interview last Wednesday.
‘I don’t know. We’ll have to figure that out,’ the presidential candidate from South Carolina replied of her rival.
‘I can tell you: I’ve always talked about my high heels,’ Haley joked. ‘I’ve never hid that from anybody. I’ve always said, ‘Don’t wear ’em if you can’t run in ’em,’ so we’ll see if he can run in ’em.’
Haley is tough but I think DeSantis is, too. It will be interesting to see them spar during the debate. The others who will be on the stage don’t have a chance for the nomination. They will soon be figuring out how to gracefully leave the race.
Trump will skip this debate as he did the previous debates. He will hold a rally to court Hispanic voters. It will be at a stadium in Hialeah, about a half-hour drive from the debate stage in Miami-Dade County.
The rally appears to be the perfect spot to help Republican efforts to win the Latino vote as recent census numbers show 95% of Hialeah residents identify as Hispanic or Latino.
During the 2022 midterms, Trump’s rival Gov. Ron DeSantis was the first Republican governor in 20 years to win over Miami-Dade County, which encompasses Hialeah. Once the clear second place candidate in the GOP race, DeSantis is currently battling for his standing against former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
We’ll see if Chris Christie does that dumb reference to Trump’s absence by calling him Donald Duck, as he did during the last debate.
