Winken, Blinken, and Nod are headed to Mexico

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick B. Garland arrived in Mexico City on Wednesday night. Today they will meet with Mexican officials in a series of meetings that will focus on illegal immigration but also on drug and gun trafficking.

We are quickly approaching primary election season so it’s time for Team Biden to pretend they are working to secure the southern border in order to correct the chaos Biden created in the first place. We’re witnessing an election year conversion, though it isn’t quite 2024. The internal polling on Biden’s management of the southern border must be abysmal.

It sounds like the Biden administration has discovered the fentanyl crisis. The drug is being trafficked over the border by drug cartels in Mexico. The Biden officials want to focus on increasing efforts with Mexico to stop the flow of fentanyl killing Americans throughout our country. Mexico often blames America for the market Americans create with their desire for drugs.

“The men and women of the Justice Department are working tirelessly every day to address the three core challenges we will discuss during our meetings: fentanyl, firearms trafficking and human smuggling,” Mr. Garland said in a statement to The New York Times on Wednesday.

“The fentanyl being trafficked into the United States is the deadliest drug threat we have ever faced,” he added. “To fight it, we are going after every link in the cartels’ fentanyl trafficking networks, at every stage, and in every part of the world.”

The officials participating in the talks with Blinken, Mayorkas, and Garland include President Andrés Manuel López Obrador; his foreign minister, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra; and his security secretary, Rosa Icela Rodríguez. There is reported to be a news conference scheduled for this afternoon but no new bilateral policies are expected to be announced. No surprise there. A surprise would be if a policy actually was developed that both sides are willing to put into place.

The Mexican president is unwilling to acknowledge that fentanyl is made in Mexico with the help of chemicals shipped from China. The United States has been pushing Mexico to put more resources into intercepting the chemicals shipped from China to Mexico’s ports. The United States also wants Mexican law enforcement to shut down labs that are producing fentanyl.

If the reporting is to be believed, illegal immigration is an afterthought. The officials from both countries will discuss improving strategy for deterring illegal immigration. The floods of illegal immigrants pose a political vulnerability in the 2024 presidential campaign.

All of this comes as NYC Mayor Eric Adams is traveling on a four-day Latin America vacation, er, mission to dissuade migrants from coming to New York City. The publicity around his trip likely spurred on the Biden administration, too. Just imagine the headlines if other big sanctuary city mayors make the same trip. It highlights the ineptness of this administration and their general lack of concern about an issue as important as border security.

AMLO doesn’t even take Joe Biden seriously enough to attend a summit on illegal immigration issues.

As migrants have overwhelmed border communities and cities throughout the United States, the Biden administration has increasingly relied on Mexico and Central American countries to create legal pathways for immigrants and to bolster their own border security to prevent people from making the journey north.

“The Biden administration will surely talk about its efforts to have more of the processing occur farther away from the border,” said Andrew Rudman, director of the Mexico Institute at the Wilson Center, a nonpartisan research institute based in Washington. He added that the officials would also most likely discuss Mr. López Obrador’s recent call for a summit to address migration, specifically for Latin American nations. He snubbed a similar summit hosted by Mr. Biden last year.

The Biden administration has failed miserably in foreign policy and the world is laughing at us. The feeble old man in the White House is showing the world what it looks like when America does not lead. Biden’s America is not sustainable.

We’ll see if anything comes of this trip. There is no reason to think anything will change.
