Dramatic increase in illegal immigration from China, Afghanistan on border

Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz recently reported that there has been a more than 1000% increase in illegal immigration by people from countries as far away as China and Afghanistan during fiscal year 2022 to 2023. He noted on social media that there have been increases from other countries, too, such as Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Paraguay, Mauritania, Djibouti, and the Dominican Republic.

The Biden border crisis is not just a humanitarian crisis, it is also a national security crisis. The Department of Homeland Security is having problems working with other governments to get programs in place to repatriate the illegal immigrants.

VOA tells the story of a Chinese man and his son who illegally entered the United States seeking asylum.

Li Xiaosan and his teenage son recently arrived in the United States from China. They are among a growing number of Chinese migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum.

Xiaosan told VOA’s Mandarin Service that he and his 16-year-old son traveled for more than 50 days from Hong Kong to Macau to Istanbul to Ecuador. From there, they traveled through six Latin American countries, including walking on their own through the Darien Gap, a dangerous mountainous jungle between Colombia and Panama where tens of thousands of migrants crossed in 2022 on their way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports that 4,366 illegal immigrants from China were apprehended by Border Patrol for crossing the southern border from October 2022 to February 2023. Compare that number to the same period in 2021 and 2022, when the number of apprehensions was 421. You can see the dramatic increase.

Today a two-month joint operation between the United States, Colombia, and Panama was announced to curb illegal immigrant smuggling in the Darien Gap. The operation will use “new lawful and flexible pathways for tens of thousands of migrants and refugees as an alternative to irregular migration.” No specific details were given on how that will be accomplished. The announcement included investments in job creation in Colombian and Panamanian border communities. The goal is to provide economic opportunities to reduce human smuggling. This is a common tactic by the Biden administration. They announce a new program with few details and include financial aid in the program to incentivize the other countries involved. How has all that financial aid worked out in years past? We are still where we are.

As long as Joe Biden and his DHS officials have no real interest in securing the southern border, the constant flood of illegal immigrants will continue. They know if they reach U.S. soil, they will likely be able to remain in the country, probably without even a court date to show up and present their case for asylum. Why wouldn’t they come? There isn’t much of a down side to illegal immigration during the Biden years. They receive transportation to whatever city they want to go to and are provided the social services they need to get settled. The American taxpayer picks up the bill.

An immigration lawyer in Los Angeles, who uses a pseudonym when speaking with the press out of fear of retaliation from the Chinese community since he assists illegal immigrants from China, said as much. He said he has been working with Chinese immigrants for more than 20 years. They share their stories of success on the social media app, Telegram. Each of those stories spread to 10 others and the information goes to 100 people. They learn the route to take.

Take the story of the Chinese man and his son. It’s an example of how they work the system.

Xiaosan and his son arrived on February 23 in Brownsville, Texas. They were detained by the U.S. Border Patrol and remained in U.S. government custody for five days.

After they were released, an immigrant advocacy group in Texas helped them continue to their destination —Albany, New York, where a Catholic organization helped them get settled.

They arrived in Albany on March 1 and have their first immigration court date in October.

And, just like that they get into the United States in Texas and are re-settled in Albany, New York.

The Migration Policy Institute reports that about 4% of the 11 million illegal aliens in the United States are from China. They come to apply for asylum due to economic conditions in China, aggressive COVID-19 lockdown policies, the lack of religious freedom, human rights abuses, and the rollback of ban on Chinese travelers from mainland China because of the pandemic that was implemented during the Trump administration.

DOJ data shows that Chinese nationals are granted asylum at a rate of 58%. For comparison purposes, the rate is 10% for Guatemala, 9% for Honduras, and 11% for El Salvador. Chinese nationals seems to have an easier time proving their asylum claims. Typically, simple economic claims are not considered a reason for asylum under current immigration law.

We know that illegal immigrants are not being thoroughly screened because of the overwhelming number of them. This makes it particularly dangerous from a national security standpoint that so many illegal immigrants are coming from some nefarious countries around the world. Is it reasonable to think that they are all coming on their own? Isn’t it likely that some are being sent by their countries to test United States security? That doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it once might have been. China is brazenly flying spy balloons over the United States. China is setting up spy operation in Cuba. Why wouldn’t China test our porous southern border, too?
