You may remember this callous murder which happened in August in the city of Las Vegas. A retired police chief named Andreas Probst went out for a morning bike ride. Two teens, Jesus Ayala and Jzamir Keys, came up behind him in a stolen car and deliberately ran him down. They livestreamed the whole attack. Their video shows Probst flipping over the car and landing in the street. He died from his injuries.

It turned out this was the second such attack they carried out that morning. The first victim, another older man on a bicycle, survived. Later we would learn that after being arrested Ayala, the driver, predicted he’d be out of jail in in no time because he was a juvenile: “You think this juvenile s**t gonna do something? I’ll be out in 30 days, watch.” He added, “It’s not that serious.”

Because this was a murder, both Ayala and Keys were tried as adults. Maybe they initially didn’t know they had killed Probst and that’s why they assumed the situation wasn’t serious. But they surely know by now and yet they were both in court yesterday laughing and smiling as if this whole thing is a big joke.

The teens’ antics began when they sat down for the hearing in Clark County court, covering the right side of their faces to hide themselves from the cameras before appearing to cover their mouths to suppress their laughter…

Ayala and Keys, with their hands cuffed to a “belly chain,” turned to the gallery and smirked at the Probst family as they left the courtroom.

Crystal Probst, wearing her late husband’s damaged Apple Watch, remained unfazed by the deadly duo’s intimidation tactics.

“It just makes him look bad,” she told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, saying Ayala pointed his middle finger toward her.

Their public defender was also seen smiling and laughing with Ayala in the courtroom. I’m not sure what they have to smile about. Their own recording of the crime is probably enough to convict them of murder or at least manslaughter. Because of their cavalier attitude during the crime, after the crime and even in the courtroom they are not going to get a break on their sentence. They will likely spend several years in prison for this, even if their behavior improves. Unless someone can get through to them, neither one of these kids has a future besides more crime and more prison

The trial is currently set for next September so we have a long time before these two finally face justice.
