Hospital workers fired for accessing Jussie Smollett's medical records (Chicago PD investigating leaks)

Last night CBS 2 in Chicago reported that “dozens” of workers at the hospital where Jussie Smollett went after allegedly staging a fake hate crime have been fired for looking at his medical chart:

Dozens of workers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital may have been fired for improperly reviewing the medical records of Jussie Smollett, who was treated at the emergency room after he claimed he had been attacked by two men…

One of the nurses said it was a misunderstanding, and claimed she never even accessed Smollett’s chart, but she was fired last week and believes many other nurses and staffers were fired for the same reason.

The nurse said she was called in at the end of her shift last Tuesday, fired on the spot and escorted out of the hospital.

She said she wasn’t asked any questions and never had a chance to offer an explanation. She said she never accessed the actor’s chart, but simply scrolled past it when looking for another patient’s name.

The Chicago Sun-Times has a companion story which is a bit hard to parse. I honestly can’t tell if the administrator in this story is the same person CBS 2 reported on or the person who gave the nurse the fake name under which Smollett had been checked in:

The day Smollett was at the hospital, his arrival and the alleged attack were all over the news, the worker said.

An employee in another department came to her desk and asked if Smollett been admitted under an alias, the worker said, adding that she didn’t ask why the information was needed because she believed it to be a professional request.

A few weeks later, the worker was called to a meeting with her boss and a representative from human resources, the worker said.

“They called it a ‘huge breach,’ and I said, ‘If that’s the case, don’t you think it’s a training issue?’” the worker said.

This isn’t the only drama happening today related to information about Jussie Smollett. TMZ is reporting that the Chicago PD has opened an internal investigation to find out who has been leaking so much fake news about the case to the media:

Chicago PD tells us its Chief of Detectives opened the investigation out of concerns the force was leaking like a sieve. CPD adds there’s been a ton of “inaccurate” info in the media, and they want to know who’s putting it out there.

A police spokesman tells TMZ … “When there are allegations of information being leaked, an internal investigation has been opened and we are also looking at our vulnerabilities.”

Chicago PD are probably trying to get ahead of the inevitable attempts by Smollett’s attorney Mark Geragos to present police as out to get his client. In addition to representing Smollett, Geragos is also currently working for Colin Kaepernick.
