When is a crisis not a crisis? When you call it something else, of course. And that’s still the strategy that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is taking when it comes to the Biden border crisis. During an appearance on 60 Minutes this weekend he was actually asked by a reporter whether or not the situation on the Mexican border was “a crisis.” He said he viewed it as “a significant challenge.” He also attempted to explain his language, saying that calling it a crisis would suggest “a withdrawal from our mission.” But that seems to be the prevailing strategy at the White House and has been since Joe Biden took office. If you remain in denial about a problem you can pretend that it doesn’t exist so it can’t possibly be your responsibility. (Fox News)

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas again refused to call the ongoing situation at the southern border a “crisis” in an interview, claiming that admitting the situation was a crisis would indicate a “withdrawal from our mission.”

Mayorkas was asked during an interview with “60 Minutes” whether he viewed the ongoing situation at the border — which saw a record 1.7 million migrant encounters in FY 2021 and more than 2.3 million in FY 2022 — as a crisis.

“I view it as a significant challenge,” Mayorkas said, echoing the answer he has given to that question on multiple occasions.

Mayorkas also seemed to minimize the problem, saying that everyone was having issues with migrants “throughout the hemisphere and in fact throughout the world.” That’s obviously false and Mayorkas knows it or at least he should know it. There are no armies of millions of migrants flooding into Cuba or Venezuela because there would be no resources and benefits waiting for them when they arrived. There is no mass rush to get into China or Russia because the governments of those countries do not tolerate it. The Chinese will lock you up in a detention camp (if you’re lucky) and Vladimir Putin would probably just conscript you and send you to die in Ukraine.

Mayorkas’ explanation of why calling an obvious crisis by that name would signal “a withdrawal” from the mission makes no sense either. If he’s seriously trying to deal with the crisis, there is no shame in admitting it. If anything should be seen as a withdrawal from the mission, it might be changing our policies to effectively open the borders and shipping illegal migrants all over the interior of the country. Oh, wait… that’s what we’re doing now.

When Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz testified before Congress last month, he was willing to call the border crisis what it is. He was also ready to blame part of the current problem on Joe Biden’s order to end construction on the wall. If we had gone full steam ahead on building the wall during this administration, we would already have finished significant portions of it by now. No, that wouldn’t have ended the flow of illegal aliens into the country entirely, but we could have slowed it to a trickle compared to what we’re seeing now.

Many of these migrants wouldn’t even risk the trip had they not taken Joe Biden at his word. He ordered an end to deportations on his first day in office. The international news showed videos of people coming across the border and being put up in shelters. The world saw the welcome mat being rolled out and the aspiring migrants responded. It was always going to end this way with Joe Biden and the Democrats in charge. And now we’re never going to be able to process and hopefully deport all of the ones that have disappeared into the country’s interior. You can rest assured that this was the plan all along.
