We hear this phrase all of the time in American politics, particularly in conservative circles. The infamous “limousine liberals” are the Democrats who preach to you about your carbon footprint and the excesses of the wealthy while they fly first class (or in private jets) and are ushered around in limousines and fancy cars. (They are also the ones who want to take away your guns while they are protected 24/7 by armed guards, but that’s a story for another day.) This is not just some hypothetical slur designed to “own the libs,” however. The Free Beacon has identified one such far-left liberal who literally meets the definition of the term. That would be California Congresswoman Barbara Lee, better known among her friends and supporters as “Comrade Barbara.” It turns out that the comrade in question ran up tens of thousands of dollars in campaign spending during the last cycle on… wait for it… limo services.
California congresswoman Barbara Lee (D.) has come a long way since her days praising communists, spending over $20,000 in campaign funds on chauffeured cars and limousines over the last election cycle.
Among the luxury travel expenses from Lee, who was once known to her leftist allies as “Comrade Barbara,” are more than $5,000 to a Washington, D.C., limousine service that boasts a fleet including a Hummer limousine, according to its website. And she spent more than $7,000 on a “premier taxi service” in Martha’s Vineyard, the small Massachusetts island on the other side of the country from her district. All told, the Oakland Democrat spent at least $22,862 on travel last cycle, federal financial disclosures show.
Clearly, Comrade Barbara wasn’t building up a five-star rating with Uber or (Heaven forbid) taking the bus. Five thousand dollars for limousines around Washington, D.C. might sound like a lot, but you can run up a bill like that pretty quickly when you’re traveling in style. I almost asked what she was doing on Martha’s Vineyard on the opposite end of the continent from the district she represents that would require $7,000 worth of “premiere” transportation services, but then I caught myself. Of course she was hanging out on Martha’s Vineyard. That’s where all of the Democrats go to visit the Obamas in their mansion and host massive fundraisers. (You have to come up with tips for all of those limo drivers somewhere.)
The Free Beacon found that the limo service in D.C. preferred by Comrade Barbra is Singh Car Service. When escaping town for the weekend, Singh will provide you with a Hummer limousine ride to Dulles Airport for the bargain basement price of $316, but that doesn’t include the tip, of course. For another 110 bucks, they toss in a bottle of French champagne. Compare that to her retiring fellow California Democrat Jackie Speier. Her campaign finance reports showed only a total of $527.42 for Uber and Lyft rides during the same period.
Of course, this could all serve as needed training for Barbara Lee. She sees herself as the rightful heiress to Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat. And once you’re in the upper chamber, people expect you to keep up a certain level of fancy appearance. Her annual budget for operating a Senate office would be considerably larger than that for her current congressional office, too. Just imagine the other perks that might start showing up.
Of course, none of this even sounds remotely surprising anymore. The hypocrisy on display among these people is legendary. How many private jet flights did John Kerry take to Davos and other globalist conclaves, just so he could be there on time to remind us all to use public transportation, preferably with electric vehicles?
And he wasn’t alone by a long shot. In February, Fox News compiled a list of Democrats who spent a total of more than $1.4 million on private jet service during the 2022 campaign cycle. That list included Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders, both of whom have been lecturing us about climate change for as long as I can remember. During that same cycle, the DNC ran up a $337,903 tab on private jet service while the DSCC spent $223,929.
Good work if you can get it, eh? So next time one of these people starts preaching to you about your carbon footprint, hand them a mirror.
