One of the lowlights of the Sunday shows this weekend came when Speaker Nancy Pelosi showed up on CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash. Despite all of the other disasters going on around the world at the moment, Bash inevitably asked Pelosi about the leaked Supreme Court opinion indicating that the court is preparing to overturn Roe v Wade next month. Pelosi started off by branding the conservative justices on the court as being “dangerous,” threatening families, freedom, democracy, and probably puppies for good measure. But she wasn’t about to let the matter drop there. As you’ll see below, the Speaker decided that the real monster in this fairy tale must surely be the Bad Orange Man. He’s the reason this is happening and he should bear the burden of whatever mayhem follows during the liberals’ “summer of rage.” (The Hill)
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday said the current Supreme Court is “dangerous” for families and freedom in the U.S., as justices appear poised to overturn the 1973 landmark decision legalizing abortion in the U.S.
Pelosi, during an interview with co-anchor Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union,” said if the court scales back abortion rights on the federal level, restrictions on marriage equality could be next.
“Let’s not take our eye off the ball. The ball is this court, which is dangerous to the freedoms of our country. Beware in terms of marriage equality, beware in terms of other aspects of it, and so it is, let’s not waste our time on that,” Pelosi said.
Here’s the clip from the show. (You’ll want to turn the sound on.) You can almost see the Speaker’s eyes lighting up as she senses a moment of opportunity in a year that has otherwise been filled with dismal news for her party.
As noted above, after blaming the conservative justices on the court, Pelosi invoked Donald Trump’s name, referring to him as “a creature like Donald Trump.” She asked who could have imagined a “creature” like that showing up with a list of “anti-freedom” judges in his hand and putting three of them on the court? The reality, of course, is that the list of judges in question was one of the primary factors that helped elect Trump to begin with. As to who might have imagined it happening, everyone with a grade school understandig of how the judicial nomination and conirmation process works would have no trouble whatsoever. If you want to blame anyone, blame the justices who die or retire during the tenure of any president.
Once the blame festival was concluded, Pelosi immediately went on to invoke the old chestnut, “elections have consequences.” That should make it pretty obvious to everyone what’s really going on here. Pelosi may be getting past her “sell-by” date, but she can still read the polls. The president’s approval ratings have tanked and he’s dragging the rest of the party down with him. The Speaker is desperately hoping that a threat to Roe will energize the base and get them to turn out in the midterms. Invoking Trump’s name was intended to serve the same purpose.
Unfortunately for San Fran Nan, that strategy may not work out any better than the rest of Biden’s stalled agenda. The very latest polling out this week shows that Biden is still “sliding,” and that poll was conducted well after news of the leak had made the rounds and had time to sink in. It remains true that abortion is a very divisive issue and it energizes many people on both sides of the debate. But under the current circumstances, it does not appear to be motivating people anywhere near as much their inability to find baby formula or afford other foods or gas, the army of illegal migrants flooding the country, or the questio of whether or not we are about to be dragged into a nuclear war with Russia. Those factors are creating a significant hill for Democrats to scale this year and it doesn’t appear that Nancy Pelosi remembered to bring her climbing shoes and carabiners.
