There’s a classic quote from Robert Heinlein’s book Time Enough for Love, attributed to the character Lazarus Long, that comes to mind in terms of the presidential debates. “Certainly the game is rigged. Don’t let that stop you; if you don’t bet you can’t win.”
President Trump should probably keep that in mind when he faces off against Joe Biden this week. The moderator for this debate will be Kristen Welker of NBC News. While there was never much doubt where nearly every reporter at that network stands in terms of their politics, Welker has a bit of history when it comes to these high-profile debates. Back in 2016, she was caught on a hot mic trying to lend a helping hand to Hillary Clinton’s campaign by tipping off Clinton’s communications director to “at least one question” she planned to ask during an interview following a debate. And there’s plenty more in her background that suggests a definite bias. (Daily Wire)
NBC News reporter Kristen Welker, the debate moderator for the final presidential debate, has strong ties to Democrat activism and has even been caught on camera “tipping off” a member of Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential campaign about “at least one question” that she was going to ask during an interview, according to a new report.
“Welker comes from an established Democratic family — who have poured cash into party coffers, and to Trump opponents, for years,” The New York Post reported. “Her mother, Julie Welker, a prominent real estate broker in Philadelphia, and father, Harvey Welker, a consulting engineer, have donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and close to $20,000 to Barack Obama alone. There was also $3,300 for Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign and $2,100 for Hillary Clinton’s doomed 2016 presidential effort against Trump. Another $7,300 was contributed to the Democratic National Committee between 2004 and 2020.”

Giving an interview subject a question in advance may not be quite on the same scale of corruption as Donna Brazile giving Clinton actual debate questions ahead of time, but it’s not far off. When it comes to the rest of her family and their many donations to Democratic causes, that’s not as much of a concern to me. Many families raise children who grow up to embrace political views directly opposite to Mom and Dad’s. (It’s happened in our family.) But in Welker’s case, it seems that the fruit hasn’t fallen far from the tree.
As the Daily Wire goes on to point out, Welker has been welcomed and embraced by Democrats at the highest level. Here’s just one example.

There’s also the fact that Welker was known to be a registered Democrat in both Rhode Island and Washington between 2004 and 2012, though her current registration status is unknown.
If you want even more background as to her inherent bias, consider what’s been happening with her on Twitter lately. Oh, that’s right. You can’t because she deactivated her account after Steve Scully (who was supposed to moderate the canceled second debate) got caught tweeting a request for advice on “how to handle Trump” from a Never-Trumper. Might that just be a coincidence, or were there similar nuggets hiding in her social media history? Naw… I’m sure I’m just being unjustifiably paranoid.
Perhaps Kristen Welker will pleasantly surprise us at the debate, but I won’t be holding my breath waiting. What you can probably expect are generous, softball questions for Joe Biden while she interrupts and cuts off the President at every turn. Maybe I’m wrong. Hey… I’d love to be wrong about this. But I somehow doubt it.
