The third time's the charmless.
David wrote earlier about the latest hoax aimed at a Republican nominee facing Senate confirmation. A last-minute attempt to attack Hegseth's character by his former sister-in-law follows the same playbook Democrats played against Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh -- unsuccessfully in those cases, although the character assassination continues for both. The media has played along with Danielle Dietrich's hearsay claims that Hegseth abused his second wife, despite Hegseth's ex-wife warning that the allegations are "inaccurate" and that she is referring the matter to her attorney now.
This time, Hegseth's attorney refuses to let this stand. In a letter to Senate Armed Services chair Roger Wicker (R-MS), Timothy Parlatore accuses Democrats of conspiring to suborn perjury, for testimony that the FBI already investigated and rejected. Punchbowl has the letter:
A lifelong Democrat, Ms. Dietrich’s bias is manifested in her own admission that “been assured that making this public statement will ensure that certain Senators who are still on the fence will vote against Hegseth's confirmation.” She is openly admitting that her purpose is to sink the nomination and has been promised by Democrats that such a statement would have that effect.
The vast majority of what Ms. Dietrich claims are things that she admits that she did not witness. She materially contradicts Sam’s sworn statements in the divorce proceedings where she acknowledges that there was no abuse. Moreover, she inadvertently accuses Sam of lying to the FBI as part of Mr. Hegseth’s background investigation. It is important to note that Ms. Dietrich told all of this to the FBI on December 30, 2024 but the FBI was unable to corroborate her claims, which were then flatly refuted by Sam, the actual participant.
Samantha Hegseth warned NBC that Dietrich's allegations are false, and Parlatore includes her email to their newsroom in his response. He also scoffs that this would have only come up now if the allegations were true:
Ms. Dietrich’s claims defy credulity as these types of claims would have been best raised by Sam during the divorce proceeding when she stood to gain the most from them, both monetarily and in parenting time. She didn’t raise them at the time because they weren’t true.
Now, one can take letters like this from lawyers representing clients with a grain of salt, perhaps, understanding that their mission is to passionately defend their interests. With that said, this paragraph is undeniably compelling, especially since Hegseth was already in a lucrative career at the time of his divorce. Had this been true at all, Mrs. Hegseth would have pressed the matter in court, both for child custody and for financial settlement purposes. Instead, Mrs. Hegseth (née Deering) didn't raise such concerns at all, and six years later still refutes any such imputation -- albeit tersely, as her former sister-in-law tries to drag her into a political fight.
Also, if Dietrich really did admit that Democrats have promised her that her claims would sink Hegseth's nomination, that should be a matter for the Senate Ethics Committee. Parlatore notes that Dietrich has legal representation from a law firm with "notable connections to the Democratic Party" and which normally bills out at $1000 an hour (according to Parlatore). Parlatore alleges that Dietrich is getting financial assistance in making these claims, but it's easy to believe that Ballard Spahr is representing her pro bono for this attempt to derail Hegseth. But that may well be another matter for the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate if Democrats in the upper chamber are part of this potential witness tampering and corruption of the confirmation process -- as they certainly were with Kavanaugh and Thomas.
That can come later, but we know now that there is no credibility to Dietrich's hearsay. This should not even come into the record, given that everyone else including the purported victim refutes this testimony. The only purpose for the Senate and the media to reward this claim with any attention is to incentivize the activist Thomas/Kavanaugh character-assassination play in future Republican nominations.
Hopefully, Senate Republicans have wised up enough to this pattern of deceit and smears to remove those incentives. They should force Hegseth's confirmation as fast as possible, and then refer this to the Ethics Committee. It's long past time to expose this industrialized smear machine on the Left.
