Did Republican voters get robbed this week — and if so, of what?

Welcome back to my VIP video series “The Amiable Skeptics,” featuring my friend Adam Baldwin! Adam is well-known for his long and storied Hollywood career, starting with My Bodyguard, and especially for his roles in Full Metal Jacket, Firefly, its film sequel SerenityChuck, and The Last Ship.

Adam and I tackle the midterm results in today’s new episode, which is available to all readers during VIP Week! The midterm “red wave” never showed up, but it’s pretty clear that the GOP will control the House of Representatives — and with it the ability to stop Joe Biden’s agenda for the next two years. That’s a win regardless of what the expectations were before Election Day.

However, it’s not terribly satisfying either, as we discuss. “It’s not a huge win. It’s not a red wave and it’s not justice,” I tell Adam, “and I think this is really what this speaks to for people on the right. They feel a sense of injustice that Joe Biden and Democrats did not get punished for what’s gone on in the last two years.”

Adam wonders if the pain of the last two years simply hasn’t extended far enough past the Republican base to have the impact we assumed. “There just wasn’t enough pain on people’s pocketbooks yet. They will feel it in the future,” Adam predicts. “The bill comes due eventually. I just don’t think that enough Americans are feeling it yet.”

We also look at the impact of Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis in the midterms. Adam wears a hat in this episode that offers Republicans a new strategy going forward: “Make America Florida.” Adam and I review how well DeSantis turned Florida from a blue-leaning state four years ago that he barely won into a deep-red state in which he carried nearly every single county.

“He’s an honorable military guy and Harvard grad,” Adam points out. “The guy is brilliant and he’s intellectually sound. He’s everything that we want Trump to be,” Adam continues. “He’s articulate, he is discerning, he is restrained in his verbiage.” That proved wildly successful in the one state where a red wave actually emerged — but what does that mean for 2024?
