If the events of 9/11 split our perception of reality into "that's 9/10 thinking" and "that's 9/12 thinking," the same holds for the moral universe shaped by the events of, and reaction to, 10/7.
In the world I inhabit, October 7 was an atrocity that confirmed my belief that Israel faces implacable and evil enemies who view everything through the lens of hating Jews and wanting them dead or in torture. In the eyes of the "decolonizers," October 7 was a blow for justice, a step toward liberation, and an event to be celebrated as a great victory.

The closest you get to a synthesis is Zohran Mamdani's sophistic tweet, which barely acknowledged the pain caused by the horrific attacks on Jews that fateful day, and spends the majority of its time blaming the Jews for all the evil in the world.
This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss. The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

Mamdani takes a moderate-left position on this issue, but only because the left position is akin to "kill all Jews." It acknowledges that the 10/7 massacres were wrong, at least, before it goes on to slander Israel and discount the fact that the casualties of war in Gaza are mostly Hamas fighters and terrorists, and uses the word "genocide" in a novel way that describes "casualties of war," and not the systematic eradication of a population.
That is Hamas' goal, and indeed Mamdani's "From the River to the Sea."

I don't just bring this up because today is the anniversary of the October 7 massacres; I bring it up because the celebrations of that massacre today continue the tradition begun on October 8th, when Palestinians and their supporters celebrated the rapes and murders in the streets of the world's cities.

Mamdani's fellow New York Democratic Socialist, Darializa Avila Chevalier, will soon represent New York in Congress from New York City after defeating an incumbent Democrat in the primary, took to the streets on October 8 to celebrate the massacres.

Today, protesters around the world are doing the same, having chosen this day — the anniversary of those rapes, murders, and kidnappings — to stand up for the bad guys in this conflict.

The coverage of the Israel-Gaza war will someday, I hope, be a case study in how the media manipulates information to create a moral inversion in which evil is portrayed as good, and the mass reaction of the left to atrocities is to openly embrace the evil in the service of its ideological commitment to phony "decolonization."
Three years since October 7, 2023. We remember the lives stolen by Palestinian Hamas. We honor the heroes. We carry the scars. And still, we stand. We rebuild. We live. We choose hope. Am Yisrael Chai. 🇮🇱 #UNFORGO7TEN https://t.co/CzgNbcs5Cd

Israel is this generation's Emmanuel Goldstein — the embodied symbol of all that is evil in the eyes of the left. It is not a real place with real people, but the Platonic ideal of Western civilization. It's ironic in a way, since Judaism precedes Western culture, and has one foot in and one foot out of it. It mostly inhabits the West, but one of the reasons why Jews have suffered antisemitism for millennia is that it doesn't quite fit neatly into any culture. It's compatible with Western values, and its commitments overlap in the Venn Diagram of life, but the West is more defined by Athens and Rome, with Jerusalem imported through Christianity more than Judaism.
This was Gaza three years ago on October 7. Palestinians were kissing the floor with joy as Hamas paraded dead Jews through the streets. Remember this the next time you see someone call them the victims. https://t.co/LvHZU903Kf

That's why Jews need a nation.
But that's neither here nor there for the left, at least at this level. Just as Israel is far less white than they imagine and claim. It serves as a symbol for all that they hate just fine. Reality is no barrier.

It says quite a bit about the nature of the pro-Palestinian movement that 10/7 looms so large, and so positively, in their minds. For all the talk of "justice," what moves them deeply is hate and destruction.
