Perhaps you might wonder whether the cultural "elite" is deranged.
Stay with me here. I know that sounds absurd. But give me a minute to make the seemingly implausible case that these paragons of virtue, defenders of Truth, Justice, and the American way, may just have lost their freaking minds.
Take the case of Leslie Stahl, one of the most celebrated "journalists" in the world, and doyenne of 60 Minutes.
“Oh God, this was awful,” Stahl told Puck when asked about the half dozen producers and personalities who were fired alongside combat veteran Scott Pelley.

“This was by far the worst experience I’ve been involved in, or even witnessed.”
Stahl, who apparently was upset that the famously priggish and self-righteous Scott Pelley was fired, believes that seeing it happen was "by far the worst experience" she has been involved in or witnessed.
I suppose that if your class loyalty is such that the suffering of ordinary people is a mere spectacle to use for ratings, that makes sense.
The Washington Free Beacon, which does excellent reporting, decided to see what else Stahl has "been involved in or witnessed," and it's a pretty gruesome list of things she has encountered as a correspondent over the years.
The following year, Stahl interviewed survivors of Josef Mengele’s twisted human experiments at Auschwitz. pic.twitter.com/vkVfYfOpbE

Now, granted, selling your child to get a camcorder may seem to have some merit—you get a VCR, after all—but most of us think that, on balance, the trade is not worth it.
In fact, a lot of ordinary people might even say it is evil, or even worse than an arrogant prick who verbally assaults his bosses in front of God and sundry. Now I have never witnessed such a thing happening myself—most people refrain from screaming "murder!" at their bosses—but I hear that doing so is bad for your career, regardless of who you are.
Leslie Stahl doesn't think it should be. It is far worse than selling your child.
Or even doing medical experiments and torture on people in concentration camps. After all, who knows what data that could yield for science?

I don't think that Stahl is suffering from dementia. I think she is deranged, as so many in the "elite" are deranged. They are so far beyond seeing reality that anything that even hints at challenging their power and prestige drives them insane.
We are at the point where Bari Weiss, who is still somewhat Left of Center, is now seen as extreme MAGA, and her suggesting that Pelley report bare facts such as that Renee Good was shot while driving her car at a law enforcement officer is beyond the pale, just repeating MAGA talking points.
The fact that Good actually HIT the guy is irrelevant, apparently. Her wheels were turned!
Of course, CBS famously promoted the Rathergate Hoax, and Dan Rather is still cited by many as an exemplary journalist, so facts don't matter when it comes to advancing a narrative to these people.
Stahl, too, will be supported by many who really do see the firing of Pelley as a threat to democracy, because in their view, democracy just means that everybody defers to them.
We no longer live in that world. Thank God.
