It must be nice to be wealthy and privileged enough to be able to ignore inconvenient facts.
The fact that so many people can and do live in bubbles of privilege and wealth is the origin of the luxury beliefs and opinions that are so threatening to modern Liberal societies.
It's actually an irony that originates in the success of classical liberalism and free markets, which liberate people from the crushing poverty that most human beings have suffered throughout human history. In most societies, the elite is so small that only a few people can afford to ignore basic realities of human existence, and few people have much choice about how they live their day-to-day lives.
Liberalism doesn't just acknowledge the importance of human freedom; it enables it by creating societies that produce abundance, liberating most people, and allowing a substantial fraction of the population to isolate themselves from the brutal realities of the state of nature.
I mean, c'mon. Who but a person who lives in a world of safety, security, and freedom from most wants could believe that we don't need police, or that the basics of life, such as food and shelter, can be provided without people having to work? Do such things appear by magic? Do the necessities and luxuries we enjoy appear out of nowhere?
Even hunter/gatherer societies in tropical paradises have to actually hunt and gather.
People like Patton Oswalt and the millions of people who think like he does can only do so by ignoring the harsh realities of what keeps human civilizations ticking. People who are in the political, economic, and cultural elite can ignore inconvenient facts because they rarely if ever face the consequences of their luxury beliefs.
This is Bill Maher at his best.

This is Bill Maher at his best.
Maher dragged Patton Oswalt out of his bubble and forced him to confront the brutal reality of the UK’s immigration crisis.
He exposed the horrifying details of Muslim grooming gangs, while Oswalt tried to play dumb.
Maher didn’t let him.
MAHER: “What’s going on in England right is a lot of that.”
OSWALT: “What’s going on in England?”
MAHER: “Again, not in the bubble…a lot of violence, protests, immigration.”
“Andrew Sullivan, for example, says places that my grandfather would not even recognize anymore as British.”
“Like, immigration is great, anything can be too much. It’s become ‘Islamicized’ to put it briefly.”
Oswalt tried to hand-wave it away.
OSWALT: “Anything can be too much, but a lot of times the way that things are framed and represented, is also amplified so that they can make their point.”
Maher hit him with the bombshell.
MAHER: “But do you know about…the grooming scandal?”
OSWALT: “No.”
MAHER: “See, that’s a big story!”
He then laid out the details the left refuses to confront:
“I’m talking about Pakistani men, who were immigrants, who were grooming poor, impoverished White girls, mostly, and making them into prostitutes and sex slaves.”
“Like really nasty shit, that would pass for more normal in a traditional Pakistani society, where women are not considered equal citizens.”
Maher then delivered his most devastating point:
“And if you don’t understand that, and that gender apartheid is the number one issue that you woke people should be concerned with, but seem not to be, then right away we’re not really seeing the world as the same way.”
“I’m seeing it much more clearly.”
“Gender apartheid should be your NUMBER ONE issue, if you really care about oppression, like a lot…I’m talking about hundreds of millions of the world’s women.”
“And it’s mostly because of the tenets of Islam, to be perfectly honest about it.”
“In the interest of DEI, they are allowing practices that are so illiberal—which is the great irony—this is the LEAST liberal thing you could be is treating women as a second-class citizen and getting away with shit like this.”
What's striking about that conversation, and it is one you could have with any number of people who are much less wealthy and privileged than he, but who are by any reasonable standard in the top 1% of the human race, is that he is simultaneously certain of his opinions and utterly ignorant of the facts.
Videos on social media sites like Facebook show intense dramatic scenes of federal agents detaining migrants, many of which are racking up hundreds of thousands of views each. The catch? They’re fake. pic.twitter.com/iOhblAYvZn

In fact, he is not just ignorant but incurious to the point of dismissing them outright. The facts are an obstacle, not the necessary building blocks for developing sound opinions. Having sound opinions is unimportant to him because the chances that he will be bitten by reality are near zero.
That is as true for the AWFLs, the academics, the politicians, and media folks who push absurd narratives as it is for Oswalt.
Facts? We don't need no stinking facts!
We see this all the time in economic, social policy, and immigration debates. When reality contradicts one's assumptions, most people can't ignore reality. But the supremely privileged can. Their kids didn't get destroyed by school closures during COVID, they live in safe or gated communities, and the only interaction they have with illegal aliens is when they hire them to garden.
Their big problems? The delivery guy messed up their avocado toast.

I'm not resentful that these people live privileged lives; everybody has problems of some kind or another, and all of us will face our maker at some point. Look at how screwed up some of these people are.
The problem is that they have an outsized influence on how the rest of us can live. Their luxury beliefs can warp our society because they have a tremendous cultural and political influence.
Look at the immigration debate. The liberal narrative is entirely driven by ignoring basic realities and focusing on only the aspects that bolster their luxury beliefs. How can you have a serious opinion about migration from fundamentally rotten cultures if you ignore the actual effects?
Grooming gangs? What grooming gangs? MS 13? Huh? Human trafficking? Fentanyl? The groaning of our housing and welfare systems? Homelessness?
NEW: JD Vance torches ABC’s Martha Raddatz after she minimized the illegal immigrant gang takeovers because “only a handful” of apartments complexes have been seized.

Raddatz: “The incidents were limited to a handful of apartment complexes...”
Vance: “Do you hear yourself? Only… pic.twitter.com/TPXdNTD5UH
Pshaw! Details. Ignore them, and there is no problem.
If I believed that open borders would have only positive consequences, I would be in favor of it. I just happened to have looked into the positives and negatives, and on balance, the negatives outweigh the positives, and it's not even close.
I think the evidence is clear that immigration has been a huge net positive for America, but that doesn't mean that more immigration or open borders translates into even more net benefits.
Ordinary Americans have been flashing the Bat Signal on illegal immigration for a long, long, LOOONNNNGGGG time, and the elites ignored them because they could. They are still ignoring them, or more accurately, they are attacking them.
Ironically, if they had listened 10 years ago, we wouldn't be having the spectacle of ICE raiding people everywhere. The "cruelty" the liberals are decrying is a consequence of their maximizing the pain for the populace. People are done with the happy talk and want action, and because the problem is so huge, the response is correspondingly drastic.
Why is Trump using such spectacular methods (spectacular in the sense of creating spectacle)? Because he needs ICE to be harsh to get as many illegal aliens to leave on their own. 25-40 million illegal aliens cannot be easily rounded up one illegal alien at a time. Self deportation has to be more attractive than risking arrest.
Luxury beliefs inevitably lead to crackdowns and backlashes, or, worse, eventual collapse.
Civilization is not the default state of mankind; it is the exception, not the rule.
The dirty truth is that Jack Nicholson, not Tom Cruise, was the hero of A Few Good Men. Not in the sense that he was right to order the "Code Red" on any particular soldier, but in the larger sense that having an organization that is not entirely civilized defend civilization is a necessity.
Civilization rests on a foundation of necessary cruelty in the same way that Michelangelo's David required a hammer and chisel to come to life, and its preservation depends on armed guards and constant vigilance. The Lourve may hold some of the world's great art, but we just got a lesson on what can happen when the barriers to barbarians getting their way fail.
Barbarians are, in a sense, always at the gates, and more than a few are always within them. We live in a fallen world. No doubt many of the people who have crossed the border illegally are good and decent people simply seeking a better life. Many might even contribute to society more than they take from it. More than a few of the people being deported would have contributed a lot more than any Antifa protester.
But you can't vet 8 billion people, so you make rules that are by their nature blunt and "unfair." Because the alternative is worse.
Believing that we can avoid this necessity is a luxury belief, and a destructive one. And in the long run it is cruel to everybody involved because ignoring reality undermines the civilization itself.
