President Biden has reassured me that America is back! He said so on Twitter from his vacation in Bali, Indonesia.

Oops. Not vacation, very serious G20 meeting in Bali, where he met with President Xi of China and hobnobbed with world leaders like PM Trudeau and uber-villain Klaus Schwab. And fell asleep a lot. He is not quite so hobnobby as he used to be. Milk and cookies are more his speed these days, not scotch and cigars.

On my first trip overseas last year, I said that America was back — back at home, back at the table, and back to leading the world.

In the year and a half that’s followed, this Administration has shown exactly what that means.

The evidence that “America is Back”  is very thin on the ground. It is a boast, not a reality. Biden himself dodders, rambles, and shakes hands with phantoms. Everything he touches internationally turns to fool’s gold: lifeless and worthless as well. Millions of Afghanis, especially women, are under the hobnailed boots of the Taliban. Europe is in the midst of war and crisis. Inflation rages around the world. Energy is short, people will be cold and shivering in the dark in Europe. And China is on the rise militarily, if not exactly stable politically–a bad combination.

If this is America being “back,” give me more of that hatred and isolation Trump brought on. He is responsible for the Abraham Accords, the single biggest foreign policy win in a generation, and worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize he will never receive. His advice to Europe on both military spending and energy policies was spot on, and Russia was clearly too scared of him to expand into Ukraine until he was gone.

People forget that Trump actually shot at and destroyed Russian military assets in retaliation for a chemical weapons strike by Assad, destroying about 20% of the Syrian Air Force and some Russian anti-aircraft equipment. He was no Putin pushover.

Those are just facts. Biden has been a disaster, both at home and abroad. Trump was the opposite in most respects, until 2020 when he screwed up COVID response. Badly.

That’s why Trump isn’t the future of the Republican Party. I certainly don’t think so. That as much as anything else is likely to cost him his next shot at the presidency. DeSantis came out smelling like a rose, while Trump took a dump on Brian Kemp, Sweden, and DeSantis for choosing the right COVID policies.

Trump is politically toxic and a serious electoral drag. Because in addition to all the drama that most Americans despise, he didn’t deliver the results they wanted in that last year in office. That cost him enough votes to lose in 2020, and his response to the loss soured people even more on him. Lots of people who would have voted for him if 2020 were a better year will never do so now, or for his supporters.

He lost even more votes by turning his guns on the best Republican governors in the country, fearing their political skill and power as he thinks their success threatens his ambitions. Success should be celebrated, especially when there is so little of it these days in Republican circles. Trump was wrong to attack our best and brightest.

We owe Trump thanks for his service, and nothing more. We pledge allegiance to the country, not any particular politician. And that is how it should be. If it is Trump vs. Biden in 2024 he has my vote, but in a Trump vs. DeSantis contest it isn’t a tough choice at all. Not because Trump deserves contempt–he doesn’t deserve all the hate he gets. But because DeSantis is a much better candidate and more likely to be a great president in 2025.

I wrote yesterday about how you should never fall in love with a politician. It is bad for you, bad for the ego of the politician (and Trump’s ego doesn’t need stroking!), and bad for the country.

Like it or not, as imperfect as the Republican Party is, it is the last best hope for saving America from the transnational elite and their dangerous plans for the country. In two years Biden has been a wrecking ball on the economy, our morale, our freedoms, and our future. He is a living, breathing disaster zone.

We need a viable Republican Party to defeat the Democrats. Trump makes that less likely to happen. Case closed in my book.
