Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.
Has Hollywood relearned a lesson about the integrity of a mythos? And what does a slap on the head have to do with patriotism? Christian and Ed open up today's episode with a discussion of a viral video that depicts an older man slapping a younger one for not standing up when the national anthem plays. Ed discusses a nearly identical incident from 44 years earlier, and Christian discusses an ethos that may have already begun to disappear from American life. We connect the viral video to the lack of enthusiasm for America 250 and the semiquincentennial celebrations, as well as the disappointing lack of traction Young Washington has had at the box office.
That opens up a lengthy discussion of The Odyssey's reception at the box office this weekend, and the "copium" in which its initial detractors engaged. Ed takes note of the lack of fresh competition this weekend too, with only a couple of micro-budget indies opening in single theaters. While we initially scoffed at the title of one – American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez – it turns out that Valdez really is a legend, or at least should be. This one might be worth catching when it comes to streaming services, as Luis Valdez is the man behind La Bamba, Zoot Suit, and other significant films.
A discussion of legends and myths seems quite appropriate as The Odyssey opens, and we contrast it to the damaged mythoses in the MCU and DCU. Plus, we discuss the latest from Bill Maher, and what it means.
