Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.

Two movies commanded most of the attention in entertainment news this week, and ... neither of them are very good. One cost next to nothing and has shot to the top of the charts, however, while the other cost north of $200 million and couldn't beat Toy Story 5 in its first weekend. What went wrong with Supergirl? Even the normally woke entertainment press couldn't pretend that James Gunn laid an egg in his D-She-U entry. The film is a dog, Christian explains, and not just because of the weird CGI mutt the film employs. We also discuss a key failing of the film – appeal to its target demographic. Female critics are unhappy, not just with Supergirl but with the entire boss-babe, Mary Sue industry.

On the other hand, Citizen Vigilante is ... also a lousy film. (Mitch Berg wrote about it this morning, too.) The difference is that Uwe Boll didn't blow $200M on his direct-to-video thriller and commentary on criminal immigrants in Europe. This film also focuses more on its core social commentary topic than Supergirl did with its trafficking plotline.

We finish up with discussions of Bill Maher, America 250, and John Ondrasik's efforts to refocus on non-political patriotism. Watch it all and join us in the comments!
