Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.

Is the fifth time the charm? Moviegoers certainly think the charm remains in the Toy Story franchise, which rung up $160 million over the weekend, reminding Hollywood that quality matters. So does emotional connection, which Pixar mostly masters, as we discuss. The early word – and the already defensive comments from the star – about Supergirl hints at a much different reception. Christian has seen it, but can't talk about it yet. Stay tuned.

What constitutes an effective apology? Paget Brewster managed to model one after attacking a critic over a review of the new and final season of Criminal Minds. Brewster's attack on the Screen Rant critic was strange anyway, but Brewster offered a full and sincere apology, and we talk about why that matters – and how much critiques matter to the success of movies and TV shows. Hint: Probably not much, which made part of Brewster's original comments quite odd.

We also talk about Kenny Chesney's eschewing of politics on stage, the cultural impact and lack thereof of "America 250," and the role of AI in animation after Josh Daws' 90-second short on Mary Sues.

Watch it all and join us in the comments!
