Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.

When was the last time you watched Logan's Run? Ed watched it last night and remembered how Hollywood could make good sci-fi films without superheroes or massive budgets. Christian and Ed discuss what creates the timeless quality that such films need, and how CGI may have become a crutch for scripts and direction that lack it.

But does that quality hinder the making of sequels? Christian and Ed take note of some surprising sequels to properties that captured a specific moment, such as The Devil Wears Prada, Top Gun: Maverick, and most amusingly, Practical Magic. Was there a groundswell of affection for that film that the rest of us missed? Ed wonders when All About Steve II will hit theaters.

Netflix has cut ties with a notable partner, as John Nolte reported at Breitbart. Did the partnership with the Obamas just run its course after more than a dozen forgettable projects? Or did the loss in the bidding war for Warner Discovery teach Ted Sarandos a lesson about playing in politics?

Watch it all and join us in the comments!
